We were welcomed by Miriam at the Harbour Hotel, and she was absolutely fantastic from the moment we arrived. So helpful, with a beaming smile and such a warm, welcoming attitude. She went above and beyond talking us through things to do in the local area, especially as we’d travelled from Paris for a couples’ retreat. She kindly showed us around the wellness suite and spoke to my wife about the spa upgrade package — such a great deal that we happily took her up on it. Miriam’s upbeat personality and professionalism really made our break get off to the best possible start. The hotel itself was excellent — very clean, beautifully situated, and with a lovely relaxing atmosphere throughout.

“Just missed the mark”

Hotel was nice. Spa was overcrowded and for an extremely hot weekend I think everyone was expecting the outdoor pool to be cold and not heated like the hot tubs. Hotel was nice. Spa was overcrowded and for an extremely hot weekend I think everyone was expecting the outdoor pool to be cold and not heated like the hot tubs. Reception ladies were nice and one with dark hair was helpful in trying to help me with a car issue. The restaurant was what we were perhaps mostly looking forward to siting out there for lunch and dinner and drinks at various points during the weekend as it looked a nice area. Instead we had dinner there on the first night and the service was appalling. We were never served so we had to go in and order drinks and food. Eventually we received some drinks but they were not ours. Then some bread was brought to us which we had not ordered which we explained to the waiters very clearly and they said well you can just have it and we will check for our actual starter that we did order. Drinks took a long time to come and due to various mistakes we were offered a Prosecco which we explained we didn’t drink so that was it. No offer of at least one drink that we were drinking? When it came to paying the bill they had put the bread on the bill that we did not order and a 12.5% service charge which sadly we had to ask to remove. I appreciate it is bank holiday but on Sunday night the restaurant was not even half full. Sadly would not return due to an overcrowded spa and no treatments available even two days before our visit and terrible service in the restaurant/bar. The room also was not properly serviced as there were two empty wine bottles in the cupboard from a previous guest and only the option of two cans of beer for alcoholic drinks in the mini bar.

A lot of silly things make it only worth a 3 star I’m afraid.. we’ve stayed many times but this time it was noticeable that things were being missed.. We had a basement room and along with other guests that had the same issues and complains it had a damp/un aired smell in the room The water tank lid on the nespresso coffee machine was missing 0600 on a Sunday morning were were awoken by noisy trolleys and staff walking down the corridor Constant noise of the toilet being flushed and the shower being used from room above - no sound proofing at all The bathroom hand soap and hand moisturiser holder was loose and a nut missing to secure.. At breakfast on the 2nd morning there was no butter available - just Flora margarine.. when asked for butter, the response was that they had run out and it was only flora margarine - surely there was salted butter somewhere or could a member of staff not have popped out to get some? I was given unsalted butter from the kitchen which was rock solid and unable to spread - it’s silly I know, but salted butter on toast in the morning is not too much to ask.. The full English says bubble and squeak on the menu is included however, you actually get a single hash brown.. when queried I was advised that the hash brown replaced it?! Trying to get a 2nd tea of coffee was painful.. Just a lot of annoying things that you don’t expect from Harbour Hotels. Hopefully the management takes note and things are reviewed Sadly, we will be going next door to the Richmond Hill Hotel next time - never had a problem there and always a smile and warm welcome at reception plus free parking which would have saved us £35! P.s. the breakfast at Richmond Hill Hotel is far superior in both choice, standard, surroundings and indeed staff attentiveness!
