I booked this hotel at short notice because it was on sale (£60-something) and in a good location. I saw that many reviews were not good, mentioning poor service, run-down facilities, a bad night's sleep, and in some cases a ghost. So I was a little apprehensive. However, from check-in to check-out my experience here was great. The assistant on the front desk was very kind and allowed me to check-in early which was great! The public spaces are quirky and have been invested in. The room (a double) was a good size and in fair condition and felt cosy, homely, and unique (in contrast to the generic, corporate, boxy rooms of other well-known low-cost hotel chains). The bathroom was in very good condition and had a nice, well-powered shower, etc. The room had a hair dryer, and ironing board, spare towels, etc, which was a boon. My room face inwards (I had a window that looked out onto a tiny indescribable space in the heart of the building) so I did not look out onto the street - as a result I heard no outside noises at all and slept very soundly. I have seen some reviews from people in street-facing rooms complain about street noises. The hotel is in a great location and a few minutes walk to all the key sites, including Piccadilly Station. Yes, there are signs of wear and tear and some people may feel the corridor and rooms should be bigger. But for £60-something I was very impressed. Ultimately it was a comfortable bed, a good quality shower, and a sound night's sleep in the city centre - what more do you want for that kind of money? No ghosts.

This is my second stay at Manchester Portland by Sunday having previously stayed when the hotel was part of the ibis Styles brand. The team member who checked me in was the same as last time, very quick and pleasant. The rooms are small yet perfectly suitable for a budget hotel and, for the price, you can’t complain. I would definitely say some improvements are needed as it is looking quite tired in places. The corridors look quite scruffy, with lots of marks on the walls and the carpets are due a replacement. Only one of the lifts was working this time which meant a long wait to go back to the room, or five flights of stairs. The stairway again was very dated and felt like an old office block and quite dark. The room was overall clean though there was a stain next to the bed where it looked like a previous guest had vomited so perhaps a deep clean is overdue. These are constructive comments more than anything, I would still recommend the hotel and would return if I am looking for a budget hotel in Manchester in the future.
