The Leonardo Oxford is a clean, contemporary hotel catering to business and academic travelers, although there were definitely other tourists there. Our check-in experience was frustrating and, I’m sure, has colored my overall impression. Check in - We have big luggage because we’re touring England for multiple weeks. If you only have an overnight bag, this bit might not bother you. I checked in. The agent pointed to a hallway and told me to head that direction and follow the signs. The room numbering conventions were confusing so we wondered a bit before realising that we needed to go up to the second floor. We looked for a lift but couldn’t find one. Finally I found someone to ask and they said “There is no lift. They should have told you that! You must go up those stairs. I’ll tell the front desk to send someone to help with your bags.” We waited a bit and then I started carting our bags up the stairs. It was hot, the bags were heavy, and I was annoyed but we got to our room. The room - The room was fine but hot, really hot. We tried to adjust the thermostat but nothing happened so I called and asked for help. A representative arrived shortly with a fan (although we were unimpressed with the service overall, this representative was very kind and responsive), and explained that the ventilation in this room wasn’t working. I told her that the fan was not an acceptable solution so she offered to move us. I later learned that we were assigned the room even though the hotel was aware that the unit was inoperable. That’s really bad customer service. So… we had to move. Back down the stairs with 200 lbs of luggage. Thankfully someone appeared to help once the hard work was done. A manager (I think) offered a weak apology saying he’d only now become aware that we opted to change rooms. The room II - We moved to the newer wing which has a lift. The room was good sized but of the beds we slept in during our tour (10) this was absolutely the least comfortable. The mattresses are unsupportive and they are on casters so if you tried to sit and read you push the bed away from the wall. The lift thumps all night long. Clean bathroom and nice shower. The hotel - Great place for travelers. There is a pool, a coffee pop-up, a cafe, and a steak restaurant. There is on-site parking. The facilities are clean and well maintained. The service in the cafe was indifferent, however, the woman who ran the coffee pop-up was very kind and attentive on the two days I went there for coffee and breakfast sandwiches. I wish I had her name to call her out. Also, there is a man I found at the reception area (he doesn’t appear to work behind the desk) who was incredibly helpful with information about local travel. I saw him help other travelers with information, as well. Again, my fault for not catching a name. Finally, the pool and gym are shared facilities with a health club. The pool is only booked for 30 minutes slots and you need to bring pound coins for the lockers. The Leonardo has a lot to offer but they’ve got gaps in customer experience that take away from overall experience.
