We used hotel as a base for a wedding we were attending in Upchurch on the 27th June.We stayed in Room 10(superior). I have detailed below from our experience the good and not so good: Good Very friendly staff in particular at reception and in the Brasserie. Pleasant meal in the Lakes restaurant on the 26th.Excellent draft beer in the Brasserie. Excellent breakfast food and cereal selection. Good communication leading up to our arrival. Room very clean. Not so good We stayed during the second heatwave of the year and despite the Room being superior had no air conditioning. Even more surprising no safe(We were able to leave some items in receptions safe) or mini fridge so the bottled water left for us was warm! We spotted on our bill when checking out that we had been charged for some drinks in the Lakes restaurant which we guess were from an adjacent table.This was in all fairness deducted from the bill without any fuss but we almost missed the discrepancy as drinks with the meal are amalgamated so check your bill carefully before paying. The General Manager was a very friendly, helpful chap and a big multitasker!

“4th visit.”

The staff are welcoming and friendly. The food is well prepared and presented. I would recommend this hotel. The Spa is also well equipped and comfortable. The rooms are all individually decorated and very comfortable. If you get room 12 you get doves too!

Second visit for us coming all the way from Durham. Communication with reception is excellent very helpful prior to our stay. Second visit for us coming all the way from Durham. Communication with reception is excellent very helpful prior to our stay. We booked again for my husbands birthday paid the extra for an upgraded room with air conditioning. Our room was number 25 this time again in the newer side of the hotel as none of the rooms on the old side have A/C. Hotel were aware we were repeat guests staying again for husbands birthday. I thought they might have put something in the room for this…towel art or a couple of chocolates…anything really to mark the occasion but there was nothing and they also knew last year it was a birthday and again nothing. Actually our key card didn’t work so had to traipse back down to reception for the physical key after a 7 hr drive which was a bit naff. The room itself was small but nicely decorated as is the whole hotel it’s very quirky which suits us and is the reason we returned. However the view was rubbish…overlooking a roof with the A/C unit vibrating away. As it was hot we had the A/C on so that drowned out the outside of the window noise. Breakfast isn’t that good in our opinion. The staff were lovely and service was good but the pot of coffee to share was luke warm. We requested another pot and that was also just warm. We both ordered poached eggs on toast…the toast was tough like the bread wasn’t fresh and the poached gags were totally overcooked. I got some bacon with mine and asked for it to be very well done/frazzled. It was tough flavourless and the fat wasn’t frazzled at all so it was inedible for me. I don’t eat pastries/cereals etc and very little dairy so felt options were limited. No omelettes or eggs Benedict available etc. I visited the spa the following morning to sit outside at the outdoor pool. There was blaring loud music from the exercise classes disturbing the so called tranquil setting of the spa. The instructor was shouting out instructions to the very small class doing aerobics and HIT. This went on until 1045 and I was told that would be it for the day. The doors to the exercise room open out onto the very small outdoor spa area and the doors were open due to the heat. It was awful and it didn’t finish at 1045 as there were 2 other classes with music (not as loud this time as it was Pilates) but the instructor still using a microphone to give instructions. I did raise this with reception and they were apologetic but that was it. The classes run Monday to Friday so wouldn’t be a problem of you are staying Friday or Saturday but terrible for those of us using the spa on weekdays. The exercise room is directly below the treatment rooms too so you’d have no chance of a peaceful treatment with all that going on. It’s a shame as it’s put us off returning.
