Living in Southsea we’re very fortunate to have some nice places to visit for a day out including Chichester, Petersfield, Farnham and of course Romsey! We’ve been reasonably regular visitors over the years, but have never stayed overnight. So on this occasion we decided to stay over and booked The White Horse Hotel on Hotels.com for a very reasonable price. When we arrived in Romsey we parked in the Alma Road long stay car park which is close to Waitrose and only a few minutes’ walk to the hotel. Even though we know the area well it was a nice touch from the hotel to e-mail us with the details of local car parks. We found the parking charges to be very reasonable. The hotel is located opposite Market Place and once in the courtyard we became aware that The White Horse is steeped in history. The location is ideal for browsing around the local shops or perhaps exploring Romsey Abbey, or some of the local walks like the one that goes past the old signal box (https://www.visitromsey.org/). Local shops include Waitrose, Southern Coop and Aldi stores. Check-in was friendly and efficient and we were soon in our room (101). As soon as we entered we were pleasantly surprised as it was so charming and full of character. The overall quality was outstanding with a lot attention to detail including a hand written welcome note! The facilities in our room couldn’t be faulted – the bathroom was large with high quality toiletries and our own rubber duck, while the room itself was warm and comfortable with a great bed and a view of Market Place. Again nice touches included a Nespresso coffee machine, some bottled water and a selection of books including one about the history of the White Horse which was a fascinating read! It was clear to us both that a great deal of thought had gone into making the room so comfortable and guest friendly. Not surprising checking out was a pleasant experience and the hotel exudes a relaxed, friendly and very welcoming atmosphere. We didn’t dine at the hotel so can’t comment about the restaurant or breakfast. Thank you so much for such a relaxing and enjoyable stay – we hope to be back soon!

“Lunch at the White Horse on St Patrick’s Day”

The food was very nice and the staff friendly and efficient. However, there was a lack of waiting staff and therefore the service was rather slow.
