My daughter and I stayed at The White Star Tavern overnight, what a fabulous find it was. Ideally located for access to the city centre and ferries. The rooms are beautiful and provide everything you need. We had dinner in the pub restaurant and breakfast the following morning. The food and service were truly outstanding. A definite 10 out of 10 from us.

If you’re coming to Southampton do yourself a favour and stay with Bridgette and her fantastic team at the White Star Tavern. We have experienced British pubs before, but this one ticks all boxes. All the team are friendly and welcoming. Full disclosure we stayed for 10 nights, which is apparently unusual, but from check-in we were made to feel as if we were part of their family. The hotel its themed around the Titanic and you actually feel as though you could be staying onboard. Some reviews criticise the size of the rooms but if you consider the whole 'ship' theme, you'll understand the layout concept. The rooms, public spaces and the dining area are all very clean . The staff seemed to go to great lengths to ensure its cleanliness. The hotel is located in an entertainment precinct, however the noise levels were not so extreme that it disrupted our sleep (though we did have a room on the upper floors and facing away from the street). Note, there are no lifts on the premises so if your request a room on the upper floors, you will have several flight of stairs to navigate. The staff though are more than willing to provide a porterage from reception to your room (and back on check-out). The hotel catered for meals and full bar services. There was even advertised themed evening events (i.e. trivia, local football matches televised etc), although only the local football FA Cup qualifying game was on during our stay. As stated we stayed at the White Star for 10 consecutive nights, due to its central location and proximity to the cruise terminal, so we believed that it was excellent value for money, especially given that we were treated like a member of their family thought our whole stay. “Fab visit”

Great little find in the heart of Oxford street lively and lovely fab staff rooms and food can’t wait to return

Positives: Really comfortable. Great location. Fantastic breakfast. Thoughtful extras. Negatives: Poor evening meal. Noise at night. Stairs if you are disabled. The White Star is a great place to stay a few days in Southampton whether for a break or a few days before/after a cruise (which seems to be popular). The rooms are small but clean, comfortable and well appointed. Tea and coffee making is improved on the general fare by the provision of real milk in the fridge in the room and a pod coffee machine. The location is perfect for exploring Southampton on foot with a short stroll to museums or to explore the Old town and walls. Oxford Street itself is vibrant and lively but that does mean you will have noise at night. You may need to use earplugs. There were some thoughtfully provided. It is a listed building so that means stairs. Rooms over three floors of narrow staircases it is not a good choice for the disabled. If you can manage them though it just adds to the charm. Check in was welcoming and simple with friendly staff. Breakfast was excellent, plentiful and great quality. The morning staff were really friendly and helpful. I cannot however recommend the evening meals. We only tried it once to see food go back to the kitchen for not being warm enough and then have it returned with a statement from the chef that it was. Not much fun for the woman young involved especially as it was a burger she asked to be cooked through - yes rare in the middle burgers are a thing but some prefer them better cooked and this can be essential if you are pregnant. My own fish that evening was translucent and grey but apparently this was properly cooked too according to the chef. I know nothing about fish clearly and must be growing senile in my mid sixties. The fact I first learned to fillet and prepare cod on the docks at Grimsby more almost fifty years ago shows how out of touch I am. That’s by the by though. Most establishments would simply have tried to please the customer but sometimes arrogance is king.
