We'd walked past The Blacksmiths Arms last summer when exploring Talkin village and thought we would love to stay there, given the chance. We were in the area again at the end of the Easter holidays and remembered this little gem. It was reasonably busy in the pub when we arrived but we were immediately greeted with a smile and 'hello's from the staff - that made us feel very welcome. The Blacksmiths, as one would imagine, is a lovely old traditional pub with an open fire - very cosy. We booked in for dinner that evening, which was of an excellent standard, but breakfast the following morning was an even bigger treat - and the nicest Cumberland sausages we've had in a long while. Our room was very clean and comfortable. We had a decent night's sleep after walking off dinner with an evening stroll along the lane to Farlam village. We absolutely loved it here and can't wait for an opportunity to come back.

We were unable to dine at our hotel due to a function and they recommended The Blacksmiths Arms a couple of miles ways. We were a little anxious driving there as in was night, and the route took us down a single track country road but we arrived safely. The landlady was able to squeeze us in as they were busy and most tables reserved. The bar area was very welcoming with a good range of beers including Timothy Taylors. We were seated in an room to the rear used as a games room judging from the dart board. The decor was a bit dated with Artex and Burgundy Red panelling, but the staff were great. The menu was very reasonably priced and there was a special Burns Night selection of a menue of traditional pub grub. My wife ordered steak and ale pie, which was excellent with a large portion of tasty steak and gravy topped by flaky puff pastry. I went for Gammon steak, served with eggs, chips, mushrooms peas and carrots. The gammon steak was huge almost filling the large plate, well cooked and very tasty. the chips crisp and chunky. We finished by sharing a chocolate fudge cake with vanilla ice cream and cream. With our drinks and tip the whole meal was less than £50. Given the size of the portions and quality this was excellent value.

“Average pub grub”

The good points is the beer But some flaws with the rest. Such as chairs that creaked as if you were on an old wooden ship. The pairing of boiled carrots, garden peas and beans with “ creamy “ mushroom stroganoff on the same plate was not to my taste.

Warm welcome and always felt welcome. Room a tad of a let down..in the Beer Garden, blind needed to be down on door and window at all times. No guest info? No Wifi code? Evening meal very good, once the fact they'd given our table away had been resolved. Found the wifi code in the bar. Breakfast poor...quite why asking for a glass of water was deemed "odd" puzzled me. Liquid tar for coffee and service slow. However everyone really lovely.
