Tucked away in a beautiful part of North Yorkshire this quintessential Yorkshire Pub is a real find! I happened upon it on a grey overcast evening, belly rumbling and in need of a feed and refreshment. Thinking of the film American Werewolf in London I thought coming in to a dales pub I would get the 'we don't like strangers ' treatment, I could not have been more wrong! On entering the pub the fire was lit and the place was cosy and warm, which matched the welcome from the staff. The pub matched a dictionary description of a British pub cosy, warm and welcoming, I was looking forward to what came next. I enjoyed a pint of Theakstons XB which was expertly poured and opted for the Fish and Chips being so close to Whitby I couldn't go wrong. What a treat the fish was perfectly cooked and the chips fluffy on the inside and the tartare sauce a triumph! All in all a wonderful stop and I will definitely return, only next time I will stay over as they have rooms and glamping pods, which will give me more chance to sample their wonderful Ale.

I am a local to this Inn and almost never write reviews. Last night I popped in for my usual glass or two of wine and found that the new kitchen team had decided to set out, on the bar, tasters of the new menu. They were outstanding. The venison chilli, the sea bass, game salad, belly pork, chicken cassoulet stew et all were all beautifully presented, tasty and of the highest quality. A significant step up from the usual pub "fayre". More country french bistro cooking with the light touch. The menu is live from today and I would recommend you give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed. Pricing is very fair and we should all be supporting this endeavour. PS. I am told the new beer is pretty special too.

“Fabulous”

We have been coming here for about 3 years. Tonight we came tonight for a meal and the food was absolutely outstanding. We will be back.

Stayed here the last 2 nights as we had a wedding at Danby castle. We had 6 rooms in total. Stayed here the last 2 nights as we had a wedding at Danby castle. We had 6 rooms in total. The staff were friendly, lovely roaring fire in the pub, delicious breakfast and clean but a little dated rooms. The shower was a disappointment -cubicle was tiny and shower had no pressure. The room was chilly but we did have a plug in electric radiator which was a bonus. Coffee bags and biscuits were a lovely touch in the room. HOWEVER what a nightmare we had this morning checking out and marred our stay. Rooms were booked via various booking platforms and paid in full months previously. On check out we were all handed bills and told we hadn’t paid enough and that the rooms were an extra £60 per night per room. It took us 40 minutes trying to find emails and screenshots to show that we had paid the rate that was advertised. Eventually we managed to get through to Hotels.com who contacted the pub to confirm that we had paid the correct price. I wonder how many people would just pay this increased charge. One couple had an extra £120 taken from their debit card so now they have the hassle of trying to claim the money back. The parting words from the girl on reception was that she “would let us off the extra amount” I couldn’t believe she said that! We paid £100 per night B&B for a basic room in a pub in February. We did not agree to pay £160 per night - we could get a fancy hotel for that! I do hope it was a genuine mistake and not a scam by the pub company.
