We used the hotel for afternoon tea which was pleasant. We had a good range of sweet and savoury products (sandwiches, scones and cakes) but service was a little slow. We also twice had to repeat an allergy that had been declared when the booking was made. The tea arrived around 10 mins before the food so wasn't very hot when the food arrived which was a shame. Also be prepared for expensive drinks as I had a pint of coke zero before we ate which cost £4.50.

We were excited to stay at this hotel. We booked in for a friend's wedding. However, the stay in the hotel was disappointing. The room was clean but the shower cubicle doors had seen better days! The shower was strong but spurted everywhere. It was so hot in the room as we went in a heatwave and they did provide a fan but being on the ground floor with window in to the car park I did feel worried having the window open. The bed was small but comfy. I did not realize but we were booked without breakfast and everyone else was booked with breakfast however we were not bothered about that as because we were with the wedding party breakfast was booked for 9.00 am and we wanted to lie in. We found it very odd that having paid £94.00 for our room plus additional £10.00 to park as wedding guest in the evening we were not allowed to purchase drinks from the other bar in the hotel. That was upsetting as we had paid money to stay in the hotel and therefore I would have expected to be able to use the facilities of that hotel. So mixed a bag Reception though were nice to us.

Starting with the positives: the breakfast was fairly standard, not as much selection as a large chain hotel but the food was tasty. Best hotel self-service coffee machine I've encountered. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The meal in the restaurant in the evening was tasty and reasonably priced. The downsides: the room was shabby and uncared for. The cleanliness was very poor. The room was covered in dust, the doors were grimy from where people touched them, there were dents in the walls. Dust on the drawer tops, skirting, edge of the carpet. The shower had mould and hard water stains. The toilet was soiled with faeces and no toilet brush to clean it. The towel rail didn't work even though the switch was on, same with the extractor fan. The towel rail was covered in dust and rust. The shower head was so clogged with limescale the water came out like needles. I had to clean the nozzles with a toothpick before using the shower. The communal areas were also not clean, every seat in the hallway of the Ripley Wing and the conservatory dining room had stains on it. Some upholstered seats were missing their back and you could see the springs. The room was set up for 1 person, not a couple. Only 1 bottle of water, 1 glass, 1 set of towels, had to ask for more. Slowest toaster in the world at breakfast.

The Talbot is indeed a lovely old, historic pub, located in an extremely picturesque location. The Green opposite is perfect for a leisurely walk and a chance to glimpse the variety of property, in this hamlet seemingly saved in yesteryear. We stayed for two nights and decided to upgrade to a four poster bedroom. The cleanliness of which left something to be desired, which was disappointing. Unfortunately the hotel seems to overly rely on the historic heritage it has and overlook some very basic housekeeping. Simple basics like not clearing away used plates and glasses in a timely way. For example, an hour later the same used crockery were sitting in exactly the same place. This may be explained by the apparent non existent management oversight. The young staff were covering different locations in the hotel at the same time, although at the time we stayed the hotel was not busy. There is a lovely glass dining room extension, letting in the sun and is full of light. I am not sure when the last time was when the floor was cleaned though. These small details catch the eye and are a distraction to the enjoyment of the characterful feel, in particular of the older part of this hotel. We enjoyed our brief stay at the Talbot, particularly enjoying trying to discover more about the history of both the Talbot hotel and the local area. Staff were friendly and pleasant.
