Myself & my husband went for the weekend. We originally booked the classic double room, which was quite small. There is only a shower in these rooms, that only has a half glass panel, so the water went everywhere, which made the floor quite dangerous. There was a bath mat but that got soaking wet. On our first evening, we had a couple of drinks in the bar and went out for food. We came back and had a couple of more drinks and went back to our room. We could hear very loud music, I actually told my husband to turn the TV down whilst I was in the bathroom, thinking it was coming from there but it wasn't. It did go off just after 11pm, so that wasn't an issue. We like to sleep with a window open for fresh air but the windows didn't open, probably due to them being sash windows and it being a safety issue. The bed in our room was very uncomfortable, it felt more like a small double then a normal double bed and once we were both in the bed, we rolled into the middle and that's where we stayed. The pillows were also uncomfortable, they are very thick and heavy, 2 was too much but 1 wasn't enough. There is a gap around the door to the room and the lights in the hallway are on all night, so these shined through and lit the room. It would be better if they were on sensors. Just after 7 am, we were woken by extremely loud music, we could hear every word of the songs. We had presumed it was coming from another room, so eventually we got up as it was difficult to sleep. When we went to breakfast, we spoke to reception about the bed and music, they were very apologetic and offered to move us, which we accepted. After breakfast, we were told we could move rooms and we were given a family room. The difference in the rooms was unbelievable, the bed was super-king and extremely comfortable, there was a bath and separate shower cubicle, so no water everywhere. The safety chain on the door was broke, so you couldn't put that on if you wanted to. Both rooms also smelt of damp. There was a wedding, which we were told about but the noise wasn't a problem, we couldn't hear anything from our room. What would could hear though was guests coming back to their rooms, after midnight, speaking and shouting. This isn't a fault of the hotel, just inconsiderate guests. This was the same on the first evening, so this shows the walls must be thin. We did use the pool and spa during the day, it's ok, nothing to shout about. The pool is quite small, I was speaking to guest who said they had been several years before and the pool was longer and that it had been made smaller. What was disappointing was the fact there was no where to sit or relax next to the pool if you wanted to and there was plenty of space to put some chairs or loungers. So you had to either stay in the pool or steam/sauna rooms, that was a real shame as it would be nice to chill out. We did eat in the restaurant in the evening and the food was lovely. Every staff member we encountered was very nice and friendly. It's also nice that there is varied seating options for the bar. Breakfast could be better, both mornings we had to wait for the food items to be topped up and this was several minutes and when it was it was cold, a few times I asked the cook/chef through the hatch if items were coming and she just looked at me and walked away. Our first morning, we were in early and there were only about 5 other people in, so not busy. Our second morning it was busier but no one seemed in a rush to top items up and I would have liked a more varied option for the fruit/cereals but that's more my choice. When we got into the restaurant for breakfast on our second morning, we could hear the same music that woke us the previous morning, it was quite loud. We then realized that the room we were in on the first night was right above the restaurant and the speakers were in the ceiling, so that's where the music was coming from and not from another room. We had told staff that we were there for our wedding anniversary but there was no acknowledgment. This hotel is listed as 4 star but I would say it's a 3 at most, more like a 2 star. Would I stay again, no.
