Having lived in the city 30 years ago and not even known of the existence of this spectacular property, and then discovering it during a tour of the National Trust Treasurer's House next door and finally seeing it from a walk around the medieval city walls last year, we finally made it here, a tiny ambition fulfilled. It doesn't disappoint. Full of character, as you might expect from a property dating back to the 11th century, beautifully maintained, clean and quiet (even for being within touching distance of the Minster), it is truly like being hugged by your Norman ancestor whilst wearing a frilly period costume. Friendly and attentive staff (seemed like a 2 to 1 ratio at times!), especially the guys tending the bar late on Friday night (Old Tom gin from the York distillery a very welcome recommendation). The only downside was that we didn't get the weather on Saturday that would have made it worthwhile sitting out in their splendid gardens. Next time...

We had an absolutely lovely stay here, one of those places that manages to feel both special and completely welcoming at the same time. The location is spot on, with amazing views of the city walls that make you feel like you’ve accidentally wandered into a historical drama (minus the questionable hygiene standards of the actual past, thankfully). The rooms are wonderfully quirky, full of character, charm, and the sort of personality you just don’t get from identikit hotel chains. Speaking of which, the cleanliness was seriously impressive. Maintaining that level of spotless order in such an old building must be a heroic effort, we know from our own property how quickly “character” can turn into “chaos,” so hats off to them. Breakfast was a real highlight too, delicious, relaxed, and served in an atmosphere that somehow makes you want to linger just a bit longer than necessary (purely for research purposes, obviously). We also loved diving into the history of the place. The more recent chapters, in particular, read like a proper David-and-Goliath tale, except in this version, David not only shows up but firmly puts Goliath in their place. There’s something deeply satisfying about that… especially when Goliath sounds like they may have been a bit too big for their boots. Goliath should perhaps have focused at looking and dealing with the well publicised and disgusting sins of their own flock! All in all, a fantastic stay, full of charm, warmth, and just enough drama (historical, not during our visit!) to keep things interesting.

“Exclusive family-run hotel”

I have rarely enjoyed a stay as much as I did this one. The hotel has a fantastic and lengthy history and you’re reminded of it as you sweep into their cobblestone courtyard and in small ways as you go around the hotel (stone staircase, beautiful stained glass windows, curious mementos, Wood panelling and decorative ceilings). It has only 12 rooms so no risk of being a generic number and is family run so you feel as if you are visiting friends. The location is second to none - right next to the Cathedral and close to The Shambles which is exactly as it sounds. One special treat for us was to access the city wall directly from their gorgeous garden just because we could and it has the only private access to the wall. All in all, a classy hotel which offers relaxed and exclusive service.

Although Greys Court is in the centre of York right next to the Minster . It is so private and secluded . The building is amazing gorgeous understated interior and fabulous garden . But the icing on the cake are the staff , they are all so friendly and helpful , nothing is too much trouble . Can’t … more
