What a great stay at The Carlton Hotel. Four adults stayed in two rooms for just 2 days to attend a wedding. We were greeted by Michael who made us very welcome and went out of his way to talk to us during our stay, although he always seemed busy. We were there in the heatwave and both rooms were equipped with top quality fans, a small fridge, ironing board and iron. The rooms were small, but the building is Victorian, however the bathroom was clean and the shower unit was huge with good water pressure. Rooms were serviced to a high standard including bottled water left in the fridge. We had dinner on our first evening. The food was fresh and well presented. The waiting staff were quietly efficient and we didn't feel pressured to finish our meal even though we were the last to leave the restaurant. Sorry if we delayed your prep for breakfast ! A great stay and our thanks to Michael and all the staff. We shall return. Alan Carter

I stayed at the hotel as part of a coach party with my sister for 4 nights last week. Prior to arriving I had requested to not be put on the top floor (floor 3) because my sister has a learning disability as well as asthma and cannot cope with the heat. It was a hot week and I had read in other reviews that the top floor gets very hot. The top floor rooms are kind of in the eaves with a small window and possibly the roof needs more insulation. On arrival we were put on the top floor as apparently all the twin rooms are on the top floor. I found this hard to believe because most hotels claiming to have double beds just put 2 single beds together so surely a double could equally be split to make two single beds?. We really struggled in that room despite keeping the fan on full 24 7 which was very noisy and the curtains closed at all times. Moving forward we feel a small air conditioning unit would be a must for the top floor rooms. When walking down the stairs to the second floor the difference in temperature was astonishing compared to floor 3. I don't think there would be any issue at all on floor 2 or below. Everything else about the hotel was perfect and the staff should be commended for all their hard work. Housekeeping was very efficient and very obliging with requests. The whole hotel was very clean and had obviously had a recent referb. Plug sockets in all the right places! (so many hotels get that wrong), very comfortable beds, decent sized TV. A bath and easy to work shower with plenty of hot water at all times. We were on a half board package and we really couldn't complain about the food which was all of decent quality. At dinner there was a short menu of 3 or 4 choices for each course which I do like because when you see a huge menu of choices it shows it is all just microwave dinners rather than actually being cooked. Stand out items for me were the excellent bread rolls, soups and fish dishes. The bar staff were always very friendly and efficient and some effort was made most nights to provide some kind of low key entertainment for those who enjoy that kind of thing. Michael was very friendly and helpful with tourist information as well as being the perfect host. Overall this would be yet another 5 star review had steps being taken to have plans in place to control room temperatures on the top floor during hot weather. Half a dozen small portable air conditioning units would do the trick. I have one on stand by for my own holiday let which probably is only used for about 4 weeks per year ie heat waves and they are not expensive.
