There is a lot to like about this hotel. The building is lovely, full of character with spacious pretty grounds. All the staff were brilliant – very friendly, very helpful. The food on the whole was very good (albeit with the occasional lapse to not very good at all). There is a 22kW EV charger for two cars (bring your own Type 2 cable) and the hotel is very dog friendly. However, the hotel markets itself as a 4-star establishment and the bedroom we had didn’t feel that way at all. It was all a bit basic and tired. The dining room felt like it had a recent makeover and was a very nice place to eat.

I liked the building as that was one of the reasons why I booked, including previous reviews. My first room had a bad smelling bathroom. When I showed the receptionist she said she could not smell anything. Claiming that housekeeping comes often. But I pointed out the empty toiletries bottles. She changed the room with no fuss. The toiletry bottle had been filled with two sorts of liquid, one less than the other room. The folding doors in the bathroom had a missing handle, so it was fiddly to get out. The overall housekeeping was poor. The iron, the phone, the remote control, I think the photos speak for themselves. At breakfast, only half the lights were switched on. Maybe they forgot or maybe there is no attention to detail. Breakfast tables are cleared partially and left. The table I was sat next to was not wiped for the duration I was there.

We recently stayed at this hotel and used the spa facilities. The spa itself was nice, but the facilities were limited, around 5 hot tubs, a cold plunge pool, sauna (not very hot)and steam room (felt old). Such a shame as I had been wanting to try here for a long time. Unfortunately, the hotel itself was disappointing. At first glance, the room looked nice, but the cleanliness and attention to detail were lacking. When we went to use the shower, there was one empty dispenser, and the shower gel bottle contained a watery liquid with the lid unscrewed and white globules floating inside. We reported this to reception, and while they brought up a replacement bottle, they left the questionable one in the shower as this was stuck to the wall. There was mould in the shower, dirt around the shower gel holder above the bath, and the bathroom bin wouldn't open. We also found an empty wine bottle left in one of the bedroom drawers. Overall, it felt like the room hadn't been properly checked before our arrival. A thorough deep clean and better attention to detail would make a big difference. It's a shame because the hotel is a lovely building. On a positive note, the staff in the spa and the front-of-house team at the hotel were all very friendly and welcoming, and we couldn't fault the service we received from them. The food in both the bar and the restaurant was also lovely. We really enjoyed the linguine and flatbread at lunch, and the parmos we had for dinner were nice. After we raised the issues we'd found with our room, the hotel also offered us a complimentary drink each in the bar.
