Loved this place, great location, staff were lovely, food was amazing especially the evening meal, noticed lots of regulars which is lovely to see and the History of the building so interesting. Bed was really comfy. Rye is a beautiful town, had lunch in the most haunted pub Mermaid inn which was really nice. Would definitely stay here again. Beth and Nick ☺️

Came here a year ago for a meal and it was that good we came back to Stay here for 3 nights 9th to 12th April this year, again food was great, breakfast was great and every evening meal was excellent, Ann has a great character and did a great job of looking after everyone. Beth also good and Caroline for breakfast. Room clean and tidy, location good. Great atmosphere lovely hotel. Would recommend it and WILL be back again. Thanks guys see you soon. Tony and Shiralee smith. Just one piece of advice either trim a bit of the bottom of patio doors in room 4 or make a small carpet well so doors can be opened easily.

We have been for Sunday lunch in 2 successive weeks with different family members. The food was excellent and service was spot on. We like the fact that they offer a small roast alongside the regular which is enough to allow space for their array of superb desserts. Traditional puddings alongside cheesecakes, chocolate treats and ice creams provides something for everyone. Very good value for money. Thank you

“Not really very nice”

Visiting family after Christmas, we stayed for two nights with two dogs. We booked a dog friendly room with an attached garden. Which would have been greatly improved with the addition of a light. Visiting family after Christmas, we stayed for two nights with two dogs. We booked a dog friendly room with an attached garden. Which would have been greatly improved with the addition of a light. Fortunately, we had a torch. Whilst the room 'wasn't bad', it wasn't great either. It was full of pine furniture - quite elderly and well marked pine too. There was a coffee table and two IKEA style chairs. Both well past their glory days. At the far end was a sink unit next to the window. And that is where you wash. A couple of hooks for the towels would have been a great addition. Off the room were three doors. Exciting! The first was a wardrobe/storage cupboard with, presumably, a spare blanket in a bag and an ironing board. The other door hid a loo - it was a bit like your grandma's outside loo and very cold. Something on the floor might make it more comfortable to use. Very cold on your feet if you forgot your slippers. The last door hid the shower. This also had a very basic floor. In fact, the whole thing was basic and very dark and cramped. I really didn't enjoy using it. After something of a hunt, we tracked down a hair dryer and, like so many hotels, no plug socket anywhere near a mirror. Finally, the bed. I sat on it and it sort of jangled. My heart sank - yes, it really was as bad as that. I would, like a previous reviewer, suspect it was a good 20 years old. Lumpy, hard and extremely uncomfortable. Plus it jangled. I had cause to wipe up a water splash by the basin using a tissue and I'm afraid the carpet hadn't been cleaned for a very long time. I kept my slippers on after that. We didn't eat in the evenings. However breakfast. We had two dogs with us so obviously not in the restaurant but in the bar. Which was in darkness. My husband hunted around and finally tracked down someone in the kitchen wearing a pinny who set up for us and put the lights on. But it was awfully cold in there! Full vegetarian breakfast. Well, you got what they said, but it didn't look like the picture. Lot of beans, a hash brown, a sausage and an egg. Sliding around on a big plate - actually like a supermarket cafe breakfast - but perhaps not as nice. There was toast and I think juice and tea. But not much of a brekkie. The lady who served us was the same person doing the chambermaiding. We wondered, given she was in the kitchen, if she was also doing the cooking. Next day the same. Except someone had remembered we were coming and had set up for us and put lights on. My husband investigated the breakfast room to see if there was fruit or yoghurt etc. Yoghurt but not much else. Same supermarket cafe breakfast. This time, it was a different lady serving who said she was just helping out. I have to say, she did a better job than the lady with the pinny. And it was still awfully cold. We breakfasted with our coats on. And left. I wanted to like this hotel I really did. We have relations living in Hastings and it would have been a perfect place for us to stay. But we certainly wouldn't go back. It was, we felt, extremely expensive for what we got. The whole hotel feels run down and horribly dated. Very 70s (apart from the loo which was timelessly dreary) - nasty colours, nasty dusty pot pouri, odd ornaments. Tiles had been painted badly and cheaply and the paint was peeling off. Grouting was nasty in places. And we had the sort of shower in which you wished you were wearing shoes. (I saved my last day shower for when I got home.) Check in is, apparently, only between 4 and 8pm. What you do the rest of the time I couldn't say. We got the feeling that there were very few staff, they had to multitask and that they weren't terribly happy about it. It had the feeling of a hotel run very amateurly, on a shoestring and, frankly, on the brink.
