Many thanks to Avril, Andrew, and Natalya for their professionalism, attention to detail and their help with our many questions. Our room was clean, the bed comfortable, and the bathroom newly updated. The location is perfect for access to art galleries, the bus station, the tram, and numerous good restaurants. As to value, the hotel lacked some amenities such as coffee makers in the room although snacks and cold drinks were provided. If we were to recommend this hotel it would be on the basis of the front line staff who work very hard to provide excellent service in a very old building with quirky maintenance issues (we had to ask for assistance three times to get the room safe to work).

“Comfortable but Noisy”

We stayed for one night at the hotel. The room was comfortable and clean. However, the room we had could have done with a bit of a lick of paint in parts. Our room was at the front of the hotel and it was noisy as we looked into the Main Street. The hotel provided ear plugs which was great but there was a lot of noise during the night and the trams started early around 5:30am, needless to say we were tired the next day. We had a drink in the hotel and the barmaid Avril, used her expertise to recommend the perfect drink to us and to the other Swedish guests. Breakfast was very good as was the waitress Sylvia from Poland. She was extremely helpful and friendly. Overall we had a good stay but I definitely wouldn’t say it was more of a 3.5 star hotel then a 4 star.

“Lovely room but awkward staff”

Lovely room for an overnight in Edinburgh - giraffe themed which was cute! We were pleasantly surprised by the layout of the room which felt more like a suite. Comfortable stay overall. “Hotel needs maintenance; lovely staff should be empowered”

Firstly I must note that the staff is lovely and tried very hard to help us with several issues that arose during our stay. They are welcoming, kind and clearly want to do a good job for their guests. But it’s clear that upper management has tied their hands - they have little control over anything including IHG program benefits. I also am inclined to blame upper management for the state of maintenance in the hotel. This is not a four star hotel. The rooms are very pretty and spacious but that’s not enough to raise a hotel into that category. Sadly we had a large number of maintenance issues. Upon arrival we discovered a dramatically broken table. It could not be fixed until the next day as there was no one on site to fix it, staff was not allowed, nor could they give us a screwdriver to fix it ourselves. Later that evening, we learned that the TV froze after a few minutes on any channel, the remote needed batteries, and the shower only had very hot water at its coldest setting (and scalding to the point it could cause serious burns, at its highest) . Several items were fixed the next day, but not the shower. My husband was able to tolerate the hot water (at the coldest setting) but I could not, and as a result could not use the shower for the two nights we stayed there. The location is great and again, staff were lovely. Upper management might want to consider how to empower them. We switched to The George after this and the difference in what they could do to accommodate guests (especially IHG members) was striking.
