“Great food, lovely service”

We dined twice in 2 weeks here and had another delicious meal. They have a wonderful new chef cooking authentic Indian cuisine and it is fabulous. Plenty of classic restaurant dishes as well but if you like Indian food, try this.

We visited Criccieth out of season to see the Starlight Players’ pantomime at the Criccieth Memorial Hall (excellent show, well worth catching them if you are here for either their annual pantomime or summer shows). We selected The Lion Hotel based on its proximity to the hall and the availability of parking. It is a lovely traditional hotel with actual keys for the rooms (instead of plastic cards that decode themselves every couple of days). The staff are very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The room was very pleasant, ours had views over the village green and out to sea. The food is good with generous portions. There is a small lift to help access upper floors. Criccieth itself is one of my favourite places to visit, it has easy access to a lovely beach, a castle and fabulous “lumpy bits” to climb. It also boasts the home and grave of the reformist politician along with his grave. (the real thing, not the current group running under that name). Things to consider. The lift has a quite heavy outer door which must be opened manually. This is not likely to be possible if you are a wheelchair user on your own. Breakfast service ends at 9:30… so if you aren’t an early bird your lay ins will be interrupted. There is no evening meal service on Sundays. The very good and generous Sunday lunch service runs from midday to 18:00, but unless you can manage 2 (generous) Sunday dinners in one day you will need to make alternate arrangements. All in all, a very pleasant stay and we will very likely return in the future.

We went to the bar, was quite good, finished off with wine unfortunately they ran out of Merlot. We decided to try the menu, my husband had the Rogan Josh, which he enjoyed but would have liked to have had naan bread as a choice. My issue was I wanted the Butter chicken but it had chilli in. Unfortunately I love chilli but I am ill after eating it, a lot of the menu and starters had chilli, I ended up with fish and chips, the fish was very nice and the whole meal would have been better with hand cooked chips. So please offer more opportunities to try your food without chilli. My options were vege meals, salads, chicken supreme and seabass, unfortunately I am fed up of those options. So would be nice for a menu without it being chilli based.
