“Group tour”

Great lodge. Rooms don’t have AC but opened the window and it kept room cool. The windows have screens on so keeps out the bugs. Hotel has two restaurants onsite. Great food.

A pleasant hotel on the edge of town. Friendly often amateur staff. Large rooms, but no USB outlets, and it’s a case of finding a spare power outlet and plugging in. Comfortable bed. A pleasant hotel on the edge of town. Friendly often amateur staff. Large rooms, but no USB outlets, and it’s a case of finding a spare power outlet and plugging in. Comfortable bed. No AC but there’s a in-room tower fan if you need it. Good mozzie screen over the opening window. Good free WiFi. Excellent hotel shuttle to town or the station. Food and beverage overpriced. Bistro service slow. Food average.

“Popular with tours”

Stayed here due to location and good reviews. We chose a room with a view of Denali because seeing Denali was the reason for our side trip up here after ending our cruise in Seward. Unfortunately, the view was mostly obscured by clouds during the afternoon. When the clouds finally dissipated in the evening, the view of Denali (+Hunter and Foraker) was only in silhouette. Luckily, the next morning the view was free of clouds, and beautiful. The room was large, clean and reasonably well-appointed, with fridge and coffeemaker, but no USB charging outlets, which seem to be common today. TV was much smaller than the one at the LQ in Anchorage, and the picture was even smaller, with no way to change the format. But, there was a large bench for our large suitcase and a luggage rack for one of our small ones, so that was convenient. There’s a thermostat, but no A/C, and no visible heating, but perhaps there’s radiant heat. At least the temperature was comfortable. Because of the early 11am checkout time, and their reluctance to grant a short extension, and our Talkeetna Air Taxi flight’s scheduled finish time of 1015, we didn’t want to chance being delayed and charged for an extra day. So, we had to check out early, before our flight, and leave our bags in our rental car, which was annoying. At least our room had been ready early, and we got to check in a little early. The hotel seems to be popular with tours, so there were a lot of coaches in the parking lot, and people in the lobby. Talkeetna also seems to be a popular train destination from Anchorage — lots of tourists in the streets and outdoor seating areas of restaurants. We recommend — with the foregoing caveats.

We stayed one night during a cruise land package. This property has its plusses and minuses. On the plus side, we loved the beautiful deck and outdoor restaurant, with spectacular views of Denali. We lingered on the deck during dinner and returned to an even clearer view the next morning. It was a nice restaurant and a delightful way to spend the evening. The atmosphere was relaxed, the food was excellent, and the server was helpful and friendly. On the minus side, our room (located in a building outside the lodge) had bare-bones furniture and amenities. It was a warm evening in mid-June, and we were uncomfortable without AC. Although we opened the window, which fortunately had a screen, there was no cross-breeze, making it difficult to sleep. We honestly were surprised that this hotel had a four-star rating and the prices were in the $500 range. The room itself felt more like two stars. There was a long line at the restaurant for breakfast the next day so we opted for the coffee bar. There were few healthy choices — mainly sugary pastries. Providing more wholesome options to those on tour who need to get a quick start to the day would be greatly appreciated.
