I stayed here for 4 nights and it did not disappoint. I do agree that lobby area need some improvement as it's very basic, but that does not really affect much of my overall stay experience. Details follow: 1. Location: The hotel is located in the corner of Broadway/9th Street of downtown Oakland. The location itself can be a bit sketchy but honestly it's safe enough for me to wander around even after dark. 12th St BART station is just a few minutes walk with plenty of cafes/restaurant within 5-10 mins walk radius if you want to dine out. Street is quiet and not noisy at night, so it's perfect for a good night sleep. If you're worried about street noise, you can also request room that facing the courtyard instead. 2. Lobby/Reception: The main lobby entrance is on the 9th Street. The Broadway street entrance is only accessible from inside and once you have your room key. As I have mentioned earlier, the lobby does not look very appealing and it's very basic. The Bistro located in the lobby area also. The front desk associates are very welcoming, especially Faith that always been friendly and helpful during my stays. 3. Room: The room layout is typical Courtyard, but I'm fairly impressed with the size of the room. It's way bigger than other Courtyards in downtown San Francisco. Although it's a bit odd that the bed facing to the window instead of the TV, but that does not matter anyway. I can just watch the TV from the comfy couch if I want to. Bathroom also has a decent size, good water pressure from the shower. Aircon works very well. Overall, the room is very homey, clean, and comfortable. Note that there is no daily housepping offered, which sadly is a norm these days. Of course, it's still possible for you to ask your room to be cleaned if you need to. My final verdict, I think Courtyard Oakland Downtown offer a good value between location, comfort, service, cleanliness, and safety. It mostly hits the right spot, although I do still think the lobby needs a bit revamped because it feels too basic and has no characters.

I stayed here for one night for business. I've stayed in Oakland once before, but at a different property. This was my first stay at the Courtyard Oakland Downtown. I got to Oakland via BART, so getting to the hotel was an easy 2-3 block walk. At check-in, the front desk asked for my name, and when she looked it up, the first thing she said my reservation was cancelled. That was a bit of surprise, because I know checked-in via the app the day before, so I was quite confident she made a mistake. After an extra minute, she did find my active reservation. After that, the rest of the check-in was fine. The hotel and room have the current Courtyard look, and was generally clean but felt a bit worn out. I stay at lot of Courtyards, so they all feel the same after a while, and this one was no different. Room was a good size, bed was comfortable, and WiFi worked fine. I noted there was no in-room safe. No issues with noise even though I was facing Broadway. For location, it's not bad. The hotel is on the edge of Chinatown, and Swan's Market is only a block or two away, so there are plenty of good restaurants. Also close to BART station, so easy to get into San Francisco. Anywhere outside of these areas, the city feels quite desolate - there seem to be number of homeless people. Overall, my one night was fine for business. It's a typical Courtyard that delivers a familiar service. The neighbourhood isn't great, but it's also much cheaper than staying in SF. I'd be OK with coming back for short solo stays for business, but would think twice about bringing my family.
