I stayed three nights at the Holiday Inn Express in Grand Junction — my first stay in nearly a year but hardly my first overall. Over the last four or five years I’ve stayed here a half-dozen times. A couple of those earlier visits were decidedly poor, mostly due to lapses in cleanliness, though the last stay was good enough to warrant a return. This time, the experience landed on the better side of average. Staff were friendly and hospitable, housekeeping service was provided daily, and the room itself was comfortable with the usual conveniences. The hotel has newer televisions with expanded channel selections and a gym that was surprisingly well-appointed for mid-range chain hotel. Thoughtful touches included local and national newspapers alongside tourist magazines.  That said, cleanliness continues to be a mixed bag. While most of the room was clean, the bathroom floor had a lot of hair — long strands of female hair that clearly should have been caught by even a cursory inspection. For a hotel that has struggled with this in the past, it was disappointing to see the same problem resurface. The property itself is an older example of the Holiday Inn Express brand, though it has gone through renovations. The most recent was about three years ago. The design and décor are fine and reflect the latest iteration of the Holiday Inn Express design concept. The breakfast area is a little undersized, especially during the busy period between 6 and 7 a.m. when most guests seem to descend at once. As with all Holiday Inn Express properties, the buffet can be limited — perfectly fine for one or two mornings, though guests staying multiple nights will quickly tire of the lack of variety. The new Costa Coffee machines are annoying because they take too long to make a cup of coffee. At one point, the line for coffee was six customers deep. Parking is another issue. With so many guests driving commercial trucks, space for other guests can be tight.  As a guest with IHG elite status, I’m entitled to an upgrade when a suite is available. Despite suites being available for booking, none was offered at check-in. That extra space would have been welcome. While most Holiday Inn Express properties don’t have bars or restaurants, some at least sell beer and wine in the pantry. After a long day, guests are left to either buy a bottle at the grocery store across the street or figure out responsible transportation to a bar or restaurant. Getting a license to see beer and wine in the hotel would improve the overall guest experience. All things considered, the Holiday Inn Express remains one of the better hotel options in Grand Junction — a city not exactly known for good hotels. More consistency in cleanliness and a modest expansion of amenities would go a long ways.

We spent one night here on our 13 day trip. Check in was very slow, seems the guest checking in before us had a problem and it took both people behind the desk about 10 minutes to correct. Room was nice and clean. Plenty of towels and pillows that were regular size, not the throw pillow size that we encountered at other hotels on our trip. Breakfast was your typical fare. Scrambled eggs, a sausage of some type. Great location but very pricey for a Holiday Inn Express.
