Not a luxury hotel, indeed, it didn’t feel like it deserved four-star designation – I’d say it was more three-star. One day, the housekeeper didn’t close my hotel room door – I found it open after a day out; anyone could have just walked in and stolen my stuff. However, the hotel adequately served my needs. Good breakfast buffet for a reasonable charge. Helpful staff. Fast, stable wi-fi. Free shuttles to Disney parks (you need to book in advance via a website and input a hotel code; the hotel explains how to do this). However, I did not rest easy in this hotel, I didn’t trust it and it didn’t trust me. Like many other North American hotels, the Renaissance Orlando Disney Springs charges daily resort fees, $39 per night in this case. I’m amazed that this despicable practice is legal in any civilised country. And does it still fool anyone anyway? Infuriating and baffling. Front desk hotel staff must hate resort fees: I suspect they need to be constantly tense, ready to be confronted by furious hotel guests at check-out. Handing the final invoice to the customer must a constant source of stress. Fortunately, my booking for a week at the Renaissance Hotel was through a travel company, Virgin Atlantic Holidays, and part of that deal was ‘resort fees waived’ (I wouldn’t have stayed at the Renaissance Orlando otherwise). This is worth thinking about and shopping around for – a resort fees waived deal could save you hundreds of dollars in hidden charges. Other travel company packages may offer it too. However, even if you get a deal with resort fees waived, Renaissance Hotel Orlando may try to impose them anyway; they did with me and only removed them after three days and when I reported the matter to the holiday company resort team and got them to intervene on my behalf. I recommend you keep paperwork handy with ‘resort fees waived’ highlighted. Keep checking every day that the hotel is not imposing resort fees. Compounding my mistrust was a Renaissance Hotel payment regime whose aggressiveness is unprecedented in my experience. The hotel asks for a credit card when you check in and takes an initial $100 hold - nothing new there. However, the hotel then makes further $100 credit card charges every day to cover resort fees and other ‘incidentals’; the hotel wants to always have a credit card hold on at least $100 more than your current bill, including resort fees. The hotel doesn’t tell you it is doing this. I get a strong impression that the hotel has frequent check-out day disputes over its hidden resort fees, so it wants to have control of more than enough of your money to pay its bill before you get to see it. Either that or the hotel assumes that every customer is a crook. All in all, I didn’t trust this hotel, and it looks like the feeling was mutual. I recommend that if you have a banking app that allows you to monitor your credit card transactions, you keep checking it to see what the Renaissance Hotel is charging to your credit card. That’s what alerted me to the daily $100 charge it was making to my Visa card, which led to the revelation that it was charging me resort fees when it shouldn’t. I also recommend paying for hotel incidentals such as restaurant meals directly rather than putting them on the room. This makes it easier to monitor what the hotel is charging you for. I further recommend that you settle the bill the day before you check out, especially if you need to catch a train or plane on departure day. Get an invoice marked ‘paid in full’. Check your credit card transactions for several days after you check out and dispute any unexplained transactions with your credit card company.

I stayed at this property for one night and came away feeling a bit mixed. There is a lot here that works well. Check-in was seamless, and the staff made a strong first impression. They were friendly, welcoming, and informative about the hotel and its amenities, which immediately set a positive tone for the stay. The room itself was visually appealing. It felt aesthetic, tidy, and well put together at first glance, which always matters. A room can be simple, but if it feels clean, calm, and intentional, that goes a long way. Where the stay fell short was in maintenance and functionality. The most noticeable issue was the shower. It appeared to need a much deeper cleaning, with visible dirt and mold buildup that detracted from the otherwise polished look of the room. Beyond cleanliness, the glass shower door was a real concern. It swung outward too loosely, making hard contact with the bathroom vanity, and when closing, it also hit the adjacent glass panel with force. That kind of repeated impact does not inspire confidence. The door also failed to seal properly, allowing water to spill onto the bathroom floor and creating an avoidable slip hazard. There were also issues with the room entry itself. The key reader was inconsistent, making it more frustrating to enter the room than it should have been. On top of that, the main entrance door to the room was heavy and shut with enough force to rattle the frame and surrounding walls. This was consistent with neighboring units on my floor, as I could hear guests coming and going from my room based on the door slamming, which caused the door frame and walls in my room to rattle loudly. The elevator was also very slow, which is a smaller complaint, but still part of the overall experience. I reduced my time by taking the stairs down to the main floor. Thank God I was on the second floor. What stood out most to me, though, was the property’s access setup. Guest room floors required key access via the elevator, suggesting an effort toward controlled entry. However, the stairwells did not appear to have the same security measures, suggesting it was possible for non-guests to reach guest-room levels. Whether intentional or not, that undercuts the sense of security a hotel should provide. Overall, this is a property with a strong visual impression, pleasant staff, and a smooth arrival experience. But for the price to truly feel justified, the basics need to hold up too, especially cleanliness, safety, noise control, and secure guest access.
