I checked in with Kainoa after several long days of travel. He was gracious, professional, and as importantly, genuinely kind. I traveled to Honolulu often for work, but this was my first time at the Renaissance. Every part of the stay was delightful and restful, which is so valuable when you are traveling far for work. We stayed at this hotel for several nights, and while there were some positive aspects, there were also several disappointing points. First, the breakfast buffet staff were excellent. In particular, the staff member who spoke Japanese was very attentive and clearly did their best to provide thoughtful service. This was truly appreciated. However, we experienced issues with housekeeping and room setup. Although we were staying as three guests, the extra bed was not prepared upon arrival. When we asked at the front desk, we were told they were planning to set it up later depending on our preferred time, which was unexpected. Even after it was arranged, housekeeping seemed inconsistent. The extra bed did not appear to be properly made or refreshed during cleaning. In addition, the extra bed only had a blanket, while the other beds had proper duvets, which made it less comfortable. The room itself was new and clean, which we appreciated. However, some facilities were not very user-friendly. The shower pressure was weak, and it was difficult to adjust the bath water temperature because the controls for water flow and temperature were combined. In addition, the bathtub drainage was slow, making it time-consuming for multiple guests to bathe. The in-room coffee machine was a nice feature, but only paper cups were provided, and they did not fit the machine well, making it awkward to use. As for the location, it is convenient with a Walmart nearby. However, there were many homeless individuals in the surrounding area, including right in front of the hotel and across the street. While this is not the hotel’s responsibility, it did affect the overall atmosphere. Overall, while the facilities themselves are modern and clean, we felt there is room for improvement in housekeeping consistency, room preparation, and better consideration of guest comfort. We hope these issues will be improved in the future.

This hotel has so much going for it but it keeps falling short. I want to love it but can’t after a two-week stay. First the positives: fantastic location right in front of the Ala Moana Mall; it’s close to the beach yet away from the crowds. The property is new. Cool black and white Hiroshi Sugimoto photos adorn the lobby. It sports a 25-meter pool. But the hotel is vastly understaffed. Calls to the front desk often go unanswered. Rarely are the three lobby desks fully staffed. Staff won’t replenish amenities such as lotion unless you specifically ask. The wake-up call button on the phone is broken. So I asked the staff to set calls, but they failed at least twice. Breakfast room service once took 50 minutes even though I had called and ordered right after the in-house restaurant opened at 7 am. When I complained, the food arrived cold. Valets are often absent or busy so my colleague often had to park the car herself. And you rarely get a welcome back greeting when you return to the hotel. The pool needs better lighting at night. The coin laundromat is convenient but there’s no change machine and the front desk didn’t have cash because staff had forgotten to bring the keys that night for access to the coin tray. And I had to ask the desk to get security to open the laundry room door because it was locked even though it was supposed to be open. At the end of my long stay, I asked two separate staff about the problems, and both told me the hotel was understaffed.
