Interestingly, we were here twice in one visit - first when we flew into Hilo and then when we flew out. The experiences were significantly different. The first visit was great. Big shout out to reservation person Betty Star who was wonderful to work with. We had a fifth floor room, which we later found out was important as all the floors below that have not been upgraded. The staff was friendly and helpful. On the second visit, we were met by a grumpy young man who was annoyed that we arrived early. “Check in is at 3 - come back later.” Because of the threat of a Kona Low, we asked about driving conditions and weather. Not very helpful. In contrast, we arrived early at the hotel in Kona and were also early. But they were friendly about, suggested some activities, and actually got us in a bit early. On the second visit, there was still trash on the terrace and no shower amenities. Because this was a 4th floor room, it was not upgraded. We had to get several tiny plastic bottles of shampoos, conditioner, etc. There were few plugs and one didn’t work, so challenging to charge electronics for a family. The biggest drawback here is that the experience with this hotel is so inconsistent - depending on staff, time of day, events happening, etc. Would not recommend food from the bar. It as slow and - again - inconsistent. They do have gluten-free options, which was great. The rooms were comfortable but try to get a room that is not facing Babylon Drive, as they are more noisy. Plan on planes going overhead at 6am. We were very, very greatful that this hotel is very close to the airport, with gas to fill up your car only a few minutes away.

I normally don't review hotels since as long as they are clean, they are pretty much all the same. However, you need to be aware not to stay there. The staff was friendly and it is close to the airport, but that's about it. There were many issues with our room (715). The door to the cabinet where the fridge was broken and almost coming off. The bathroom was dark, probably to hide the mold in the shower and rust on the curtain rod. Additionally, it appears that there was a leak from above in the shower and there was a gap in the ceiling where the sheetrock meets the wall of about an inch. Finally, the towel hook was coming off the wall and hanging crookedly. The next morning, I mentioned it to someone at the front desk and all she did was apologize, even after showing her the pictures I took of the issues. Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted that picture. of the ceiling, but uploaded the rest. This is an old, dated hotel that not only needs an upgrade, but the staff needs to pay more attention to the maintenance issues. We have to stay there one more night on our way home, and are not looking forward to it.

“A gorgeous structure, a beautiful, unique location, deserves a remodel and re-staffing .”

The Hilo Hawaiian hotel is in a spectacular setting and housed in a beautiful building but staffed by a crew that is not consistently hospitable. We met staff who were wonderful and we met staff who told us things like “you must leave the premises after you check out”, “here’s your bill. I’ll be happy to take it anytime you want” at 9:20 when we weren’t finished drinking in their bar that closes at 10. Moreover, the rooms are badly in need of upgrading as is the hotel entirely crying for a good remodel.
