I had never heard of the Canopy by Hilton until it came up while searching for accommodation on a weekend trip to Chicago. The entire time I’ve been here I’ve kept saying to myself: “Everything makes so much sense. Why isn’t every hotel like this? Why is nobody else doing this?” the hotel takes from the local character, including art deco, trains, and travel. The marble and chrome bathroom, the patterned carpet and hardwood floors, the abundant brass, leather and velour/velvet design accents felt inspired by a steamer trunk and a vintage pullman car. The rooms were perfectly appointed with a rainfall shower and and held attachment, a built-in medicine cabinet allowed me to lay out all my toiletries and keep them off the counter, which I loved. The entire room just felt so sexy and cool. Additionally, there were abundant lighting choices, and as a gay man, I appreciate the lack of harsh overhead lighting, and instead having a simple switch by the door to turn everything off at once yet still being able to adjust each switch around the room to my liking. Amenity wise, there was an espresso coffee machine with six coffee pods (four regular two decaf) which was a delicious and easy way to start my day and they provide a bottle to pick up filtered water from a station in the hallway rather than make you pay for bottled water or drink the tap. It felt so civilized. The coffee tasted great with the filtered water. There are no ice machines in the hotel but room service will happily deliver a bag for you tokeep in your in room refrigerator hidden neatly into a built-in cabinet that looks like it came right out of 1932. Well, I did not use the Fitness area. I did check it out and it looked extremely well appointed as was the business center and thedepot coffee spot in the lobby had some nice options, though a bit pricey for my taste. Reception was extremely friendly and even allowed me to check in early without an additional cost as I came in early from the Amtrak at Union Station nearby. The closeness of the Union Station is a big plus for this property. when it came time to check out, they were more than happy to store my bags while I relaxed in the lobby. I also had lunch at the Seville restaurant on the roof where I enjoyed a beet salad with chicken that was top notch and absolutely refreshing though I did feel that the restaurant was a little cold in temperature and energy, but perhaps when it’s filled with people it doesn’t feel that way. My stay here has inspired me to keep an eye open for Canopy properties on my future travels. The local flavor and modern hip style made me feel really good, especially since for a long time people turned to Airbnb for local flavor, but now we’re starting to see the damage that Airbnb is causing to housing prices and our communities causing them to be hollowed out by the very people who want to come and experience them. I would happily book again and I’m excited to try other properties if I get the opportunity.
