“Chicago visit”

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. Hotel is a bit dated ans could do with a revamp. The food at restaurant was good, we had breakfast and it was lovely. Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. Hotel is a bit dated ans could do with a revamp. The food at restaurant was good, we had breakfast and it was lovely. We also purchased a drink from the bar, which was a bit expensive, my husband had coke, which wasn’t a can, instead just a soda stream drink. The bar man was not very conversant and didn’t take the time to be very welcoming.

I would stay at the Millennium Knickerbocker again if in Chicago if the price was right. I mean, value for money is always a major factor in our opinions and my room at the Knickerbocker felt like a bargain. I guess I got lucky with my timing (midweek in late April, booked direct) because it didn’t cost any more than a Holiday-Inn-type place. I paid twice as much a week later for a night at the Millennium Biltmore in Los Angeles and I thought this was fair. The Biltmore is truly amazing and is probably about twice as impressive/comfortable/relaxing/exciting as the Knickerbocker. But the Knickerbocker is historic and amazing too – it’s just unfortunate that some of its features, like the beautiful ballroom, are not used every day. The ballroom was used for luggage storage while I was there but can serve as a wedding venue/function room (see pics). Pretty much everything was fine for me on a comfort basis, although next time I would ask for a better view / lots of natural light. There were a couple of issues – the room wasn’t serviced on day 2 and the TV didn’t work on night 3 – but they didn’t bother me that much since everything else was fine. The things I loved about this hotel: The location is great. I loved being able to walk to Oak Beach in 4 minutes or to take a longer hike along Lakefront Trail to Lincoln Park. Walking by the lake towards Navy Pier is also good and I became very fond of the walk along N Michigan Ave to the Chicago River and the Art Institute, etc. I had no problems with noise, bed is comfy, bathrooms are sleek and clean, and walking in and out of the hotel always felt like a little adventure was about to happen, or had just happened. I’m also rating the Millennium Knickerbocker 3/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the following: • The Millennium announced a Green Path plan that includes “a science-based target to achieve a 27 percent reduction in scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 with a 2017 base line.” • The Green Path plan also outlined strategies on energy efficiency, reducing water use, waste reduction, and minimizing the use of single-use plastics. • They haven’t yet published anything (that I can find) on progress towards the GHG target. One easy way for the Knickerbocker Hotel to reduce GHG emissions would be to cut the steak from the breakfast and lunch menus – beef is responsible for around 10% of global GHGs. • My experience as a guest was that the Knickerbocker is making some progress on some of the other Green Path strategies such as reducing single-use plastics. Bathroom supplies, for example, seemed to be decent – refillable recycled containers for lotion, shampoo, and body wash; no palm oil; no animal testing. • At check-in I was told that they’re going to transition to reusable glass water bottles. They do have filling stations for water bottles on several floors. I do wish they would do better on coffee supplies – I hate opening their crappy packets of coffee condiments. Why not provide some paper packets containing a wooden stirrer and decent raw sugar? Ceramic mugs would be a great addition instead of plastic-wrapped disposable cups. • Right now I’d say Millennium Knickerbocker is very slightly better than average – 3/5 Green Stars. They could easily do a good bit better with some small changes.
