After 15 yrs of staying on Monhegan Island, we decided to try Chebeague. The Inn is a glorious survivor of days gone by, and having an understanding of your typical Maine Island Inns we were not disappointed. The short (15 min) ferry ride from Cumberland was smooth and comfortable. As we are older, we called the Inn ahead of time and their shuttle driver met us at the dock and delivered us at the top of the hill, right at the entrance. (But younger, heartier souls could easily walk it). We had booked a 2nd floor room with bath - do your homework, some have shared hallway baths only. Our corner room overlooked the ocean on one side and the golf course on the other. A lovely cross breeze each night, along with the ceiling fan, made sleeping extremely comfortable. Breakfast is served Continental style with coffee, juices, pastries, fruit, quiches etc. Everything was very fresh and delicious. (Bring your travel mug to fill up with coffee to take out on the deck!) The lounges and deck furniture are older pieces that, while suiting the laid back style of the inn, are a bit low to the ground with soft, compressed cushions that make getting up a tad comedic for this old lady with the aching hip and knees! Lunch and dinner in the dining room were fantastic, as were the cocktails on the deck! Bed was comfy, bath extremely clean, a variety of soaps, lotions, shampoo and hair dryer provided. No tv’s in the rooms meant time to catch up with my reading! Unlike Monhegan, which is easily walkable from one end to the other, we recommend bringing your bikes or renting a golf cart to explore. Lovely beaches, country store (AWESOME sandwhiches) and just a general serene environment. Loved it! Will be back!

This is the most expensive hotel room I've paid for--$480 for a tiny room without views (except some strong smells from the vents over the kitchen) that did not have a bathroom. This is a con with many of the online services like Priceline and others which don't tell you that there is no bathroom included. The hotel is the only one on the island and the only dinner restaurant, so they price accordingly and in our experience, didn't have any local food including lobster! The staff seem demoralized--our pick up from the ferry, when we asked, said he didn't care how we pronounced 'Chebeague.' The woman who checked us in spoke so softly we could not hear a thing, and she never told us about wifi, breakfast hours, the bikes, etc. We missed breakfast as a result. The bikes are all broken in different ways, but we did repair two and rode them around the island which was really enjoyable. The island was a more friendly reprieve from this hotel which had a plantation/ "Get Out" feel to it, where people wear sweaters over their shoulders like in the Preppy Handbook.
