“Historic Stay”

it’s a cool location, but maybe getting a little worn out and needs some updating. We stayed in the Quitman Cottage which is very private and has a nice shared porch with a view of a pond. It is not a historic building, but one of many replicas on the property.

Enjoyed staying in main house in a suite with a beautiful bed and wonderful rain shower. Dinner was quite good in a candlelit romantic setting. Feather pillows was an added tough. Breakfast that was included was basic but with good coffee.

I picked this specific location based on reviews I read. We stayed in room 25, the Miss Eliza. The reviews left out some important information so I’m going to share it all. I want to say first that the staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean except for the carpet which was filthy and turned my husband’s socks dark brown. It also smelled a bit musty…of course the house is over 200 years old so I guess that is to be expected but I’m sure the dirty rugs aren’t helping. I will also say that the fitted sheet did not stay on the bed it was too small. They did bring us clean towels everyday and were accommodating with anything we asked for. However, here are some things you should know before coming here. 1) the grounds are badly in need of a grounds keeper, round-up, a lawn mower and some hedge trimmers. The “beautiful 26 acres of garden” are not beautiful but overgrown and not well maintained plus there had been some rain recently and no one bothered to pick up any of the limbs that made walking through the wisteria gazebo hazardous. The courtyard tables were not clean and the fountain has algae growing in it. The house is also not maintained well. There are extensions cord laying on the porch the carpet outside is tearing up and there are cobwebs all over the outside. Simple easy fixes but still unsightly 2) the free breakfast is a choice between eggs, grits and a meat or French toast with coffee or juice. They did have fruit out but no other options. Including no Bloody Mary or mimosas. 3) the lounge doesn’t have a dedicated bartender, or at least not on Sunday and Mondays, so if you want a drink you have to go to the restaurant and flag down a waiter to come get it for you. Overall not a bad stay just somethings that management should be looking into and correcting if they want return business. I can say if we are ever here again we will not be staying at the Monmouth, there are many other places to choose from rather than return to a place that just appears to be rundown and not well taken care of.

Monmouth has a nice restaurant and gardens. My room was upstairs and was clean. Floors creaked, so it felt like a haunted house. Not a bad room experience. I’ve stayed B&B in Natchez since the 1980s with mostly positive reviews. I had not stayed at Monmouth, so a decent rate was offered through USAA Perks. I was surprised with the $76.93 “tax” for my two-night stay. Tax is 7% sales plus 3% tourism plus $2 per night. Upon check-in I found out that the additional amount included an $18.95 + tax surcharge fee for breakfast each day and a potential 10 a.m. tour. Breakfast was fine, but the Gratuity Appreciated sign surprised me. I really was not prepared with cash for leaving something. To have a member of the wait staff call me out on it was unpleasant. I had planned to ask the front desk to add something for them to my bill. She also called out other guests for their impatience in the staff’s service which I felt inappropriate. Guess the waitress thought she could treat me (and the others) this way because I (we) wouldn’t come back. She was correct. I won’t be staying at Monmouth again and plan to decline any invitation from any of my friends wishing to dine here. True Southern Hospitality still exists in Natchez, just not in Monmouth’s breakfast dining room.
