Such a quaint and beautiful little hotel in NYC. My husband and I had gotten off a cruise ship and were super early for check-in on 1/14, but the young lady at the desk was so kind and helpful. She said as soon as a room was available she would get us in. She welcomed us to grab a coffee, took and checked our bags (so we didn’t have to worry about them), and made us super comfortable after a very hectic debarkation process. What a pleasant experience, She was absolutely Lovely. We got into our room early (Thank You!!!) The room was small but so nicely decorated. The bed was extremely comfortable and the shower was nice and hot! We would absolutely stay again!

The hotel is very dated and in desperate need of a facelift. Also, the hotel restaurant charged different prices for the same cocktail on the 2 nights I patronized the facility. The one bright spot was the rooms, which offered an additional seating area, which is unique for New York hotels. Also, the price was extremely modest for NYC.

“Average, below average for the expense.”

Although a very good location, this is the only real highlight of the stay. The building is small so the view from the room is a brick wall (better off staying in a big standard Virgin Hotel as at least it’s got great views). Although a very good location, this is the only real highlight of the stay. The building is small so the view from the room is a brick wall (better off staying in a big standard Virgin Hotel as at least it’s got great views). Room was small although the bathroom was very nice. Also only one lift/elevator which didn’t work one of the days and would have been a real struggle getting up to our room if it hadn’t have worked when we got back. Coffee shop staff very rude.

We stayed at HGU New York for four nights during the Christmas break of 2023. The overall experience was mediocre, and there are several pros and cons we would like to share. Pros: Location - that is the main reason why we picked this hotel. It is a minute away from the subway line 6 station, ~5 mins walk from the Empire State Building / Koreatown, and ~15 mins walk from the Penn station. So it is very convenient to visit different places via public transportation or get delicious authentic Asian food. Staff - the hotel staff at the concierge and cafe are friendly and helpful. Even it was the busiest season during the year, they were nice enough to provide the help as much as they can. We arrived at the hotel much earlier than the expected time, but the lady at the concierge was still able to check us in. We also had some great conversations with the cleaning crews. Pet friendly policy - we were traveling with our little dog, and the hotel policy allowed her staying with us. There was a $150 fee for the entire stay, which is a common and reasonable price in NYC. Cons: Room - we booked a standard Queen room, but we were astonished by its size once opening the door. It was extremely small (200 sqft at most) even for the standard of NYC, and we did not have enough room to place our luggage or even walk freely. There was no view from the window, and the room was so dark that we had to turn on the light all the time during our stay. The pictures of the rooms provided by the hotel were not close to the reality. Elevator - there are two elevators in the building. But one of them is used exclusively by the service crew, which means all the guests on the entire ten floors need to share one elevator. There were multiple times that we spent prolonged time waiting for the elevator. You can choose to use the stairway instead, but the stairs are steep and somehow sketchy. Dinning service - the complementary breakfast was included for our stay. The barista at the cafe was nice and friendly, but the dining experience was poor which is related to how the cafe works. When we ordered food at the cafe, the barista had to contact with the kitchen upstairs, and goes upstairs to pick up the food when it was ready amid preparation of hot drinks for other guest. The waiting time can be ridiculously long during the rush hour. The quality of food was actually decent, but it was just unacceptable to wait 40 minutes for a tuna salad sandwich. Overall, our experience at HGU New York has been a disappointment. We understand that the hotel has done their best to accommodate as many as guests during the Christmas, but the amenity of the hotel needs some substantial improvement. We would not recommend it if you are traveling with a big family, or for an extended period of time. To note, HGU New York was under the “small luxury hotel” brand, but you would only expect the first half of it as it has nothing to do with anything luxury.
