“Great location, good price for midtown, but lots of flaws”

I wanted to like this location. We visit Birdland, across the street, a few times a year. Unfortunately, there were several issues to kick this review down to average, maybe below average. On the positive side, staff are great; the room is clean with newer and comfortable bedding, newer furnishings and recently remodeled bathroom. The included breakfast had oatmeal, cereal, eggs, sausage, ham and cheese sandwich, small yogurts and actually good coffee. The location is superb, and the price was very attractive for midtown. On the negative side, the room is small (the website claims 260 sq ft, more like 200), I reserved a king size bed and the room was a queen size with visibly less space than the website picture (several other reviews here had the same experience with that, what's going on?), I was on the 7th floor, two rooms away from the elevator, but all night long and especially in the morning, hear a mechanical clang-clung-clang every time the elevator stopped on a floor, I could not sleep; the a/c thermostat was defective so that the room setting was a high point and would cool the room down 5 degrees before shutting cooling, so sleeping was either very cold or very hot - a mechanic, who did not understand or speak English very well, drained the a/c of water and left, not fixing the thermostat issue; breakfast fruit was just a small apple and there are tables for about 15 people, so I inconveniently ate on a sofa; the elevator is painfully slow and tests your patience.

It’s really difficult for me to give this place anything better than a mediocre review. First, the good: Hotel staff are friendly and helpful. Also, the location is close to Times Square but not too close. Everything was clean…room, bed, shower…very important, especially in NYC where cleanliness can’t be assumed. Now, the bad: Everything is cramped. Lobby is small. Breakfast area is tiny. There’s only 5-6 tables in the breakfast area. Breakfast itself was mediocre at best. There’s one elevator. It’s painfully slow and makes banging sounds at every floor. Only seven floors in this building, but it’ll take you forever to get to/from your room. Once you make it to your room, prepare to be cramped. It’s so small, we questioned if it was actually smaller than a basic cruise ship room. There’s no space to do anything. Water pressure in the shower is too weak. Our first night was painfully hot. Maintenance came but couldn’t fix the AC. We later found out the AC was out on the entire 7th floor and wouldn’t be fixed until the morning. Management didn’t fight me the next morning when I asked to have the first night taken off the bill. Guess that should go up in the “good” section. Kudos to the staff for making the best out of a building they have to know has a lot of issues, so at least there’s that. It’d take a lot for me to stay there again.

The hotel’s location was one of its biggest advantages. It was conveniently located just a couple of blocks from Penn Station, Times Square, and many other popular New York City attractions, making it easy to get around the city. When I arrived, I was quickly greeted by the front desk attendant and had a smooth check-in experience. One thing to note is that this is a very small hotel. There is only one elevator, and it is extremely slow. If you don’t mind waiting, it’s manageable, but it definitely became an inconvenience during my stay. The elevator was working, but I often chose to take the stairs instead, walking down four floors and up three floors each day, which became a bit frustrating. The room itself was very clean, neat, and seemed well maintained. I appreciated the small suite-style kitchenette, which was a convenient feature and gave the room a little more functionality, especially for a longer stay. However, I did encounter an issue with the bathroom. There appeared to be a small gnat issue or nest in the shower drain area, with several gnats flying around. It was annoying and, in my opinion, raised some concerns about cleanliness and hygiene perhaps with the city drain. I contacted the front desk to see if there were any other rooms available, but the hotel was fully booked during my stay, so I had to remain in the same room. The hotel does offer complimentary breakfast, which included items such as sausage, eggs, bagels, oatmeal, and coffee. It was nothing elaborate, but it was a nice convenience to have available. I only used the breakfast once during my stay since it wasn’t really the type of meal I normally eat, but I appreciated the option. Overall, this hotel is a decent choice for travelers looking to save a little money while staying in the heart of Manhattan. The location is excellent, and the rooms are clean and functional. However, due to the extremely slow elevator and the gnat issue in my bathroom, I would probably not choose this particular location again for a future New York City stay.

“Very Basic with VERY SLOW elevator in the front”

I am a marriott titanium so I think I've stayed at a wide gamut of their hotel brands. This is my first Towneplace and I was prepared for it to be like a residence inn or similar brands. Yes it was but I can say it didnt necessarily meet up to standards. This is a smaller hotel in a very convenient location to times square. I never felt it was noisy and it was clean. There are two different sections of the hotel; front and back (back faces 43rd st). When I checked in I stayed in the front of the hotel in a reserved king room. I asked for any upgraded rooms and they said there were none available. After getting the keys it took 3 or 4 minutes for the elevator to arrive. MIND YOU the hotel is maybe 5 or 6 stories so this is unacceptable. Got to the room and it was a queen. Went to the front desk and they said according to the computer it was a king. I said you're more than welcome to come to the room and see it was a queen bed. At this point it really didnt matter since I was told it was sold out and we can try to move you the next day. The next day at 8am I went to the front desk and the person behind the desk was very pleasant and nice and said I can give you the larger room which has a king and is handicap accessible. I took it. This room was in the back hotel and the elevators actually worked and didnt take more than a minute to arrive. THe room was much nicer. The breakfast was basic and decent...exactly what I was expecting. Also beware the front doors to the hotel auto locks at 7pm. That's a little early for the times square area. I never felt unsafe so not sure why that was even necessary Lastly, I wish I could post on the marriott website, but you need to be invited to leave a review. I relied on the above 4 star rating to book this hotel, but it really is a 3 star and I would have selected a different hotel.
