Homewood Suites by Hilton in Durham-Chapel Hill, I-40 is a tired hotel with rooms and hallways definitely in need of an upgrade, unlike another North Carolina Homewood Suites we have stayed at multiple times. Hallway carpets were dirty and stained, and hallways had a strong odor seemingly with attempts to cover up the smells. It didn’t work. Cable wires were exposed running all along the hallway ceiling, but it appeared that work was in process to cover them up. The sink in the room was cracked and crazed, making it hard for housekeeping to properly clean. It was disgusting. Having no sink or light switches in the bathroom was inconvenient, and unhygienic. On a positive note, the tub and toilet looked newer, and the shower had plenty of hot water and strong water pressure. And housekeeping did as good a job as they could in cleaning the room. We did not realize that ALL rooms in this hotel are pet friendly. We will never stay in any such hotel ever again. Whoever came up with that policy? The thought that a cat or dog could have been in our room, or worse yet, sleeping in the bed, or jumping on the kitchen counters was exceedingly disturbing, as was the fact that animals traveled in the elevators. Speaking of the elevators, there were multiple sticky stains in the elevator when we left in the afternoon, and they were still there when we returned that night. On another positive note, the lobby and breakfast common spaces were clean, spacious, and accommodating. Breakfast had a good variety of items. Tanya, who worked the Saturday breakfast, and the woman who worked the Sunday breakfast, whose name unfortunately we didn’t get, were absolutely delightful, friendly and extremely helpful! Kudos to them! The Monday and Tuesday breakfast women, not so much. All of the other staff we encountered were very pleasant, although we hardly ever saw any employee manning the front desk, not very welcoming for new arrivals or check-outs, or for any guest having a question. My family rented multiple rooms for a weekend reunion, and most of us felt pretty much the same way. Too bad, since the location is convenient to many areas, and to family who live nearby. We will definitely be looking for a different hotel to host our next get together in Durham/Chapel Hill.

So I’ve read the most recent reviews and there is a lot of truth to them… The hotel is pretty “tired” and needs to start renovating/updating the rooms and hallways. The lobby is very nice. And the basics of rooms are ok-just needs fresh paint, carpet, couch/chairs… What prompted me to write was the person working the breakfast. Her name was Tanya. She was a bright ray of sunshine! She was very positive/upbeat! She hustled the entire time I sat there-refilling food, cleaning tables, etc. When someone would ask her for something not readily available, she would try to accommodate the guest-and she did it with a smile! Don’t lose her!!! All-in-all, the hotel is fine for a night and the price… and Tanya is the gem!
