My stay at the Kimpton Riverplace was wonderful! The entire staff were welcoming, professional and incredibly responsive (which is especially helpful when running a retreat!). One staff member in particular (Oliver at the front desk) went over and beyond to be accommodating, helpful, and just so kind in general! I would definitely return for both work and personal stays, the views were breathtaking and the food delicious.

Our stay at this hotel was nothing short of perfection. The property is stunning. It is right on the Willamette, giving you incredible river views. You can watch the dragon boat teams practicing in the evening or go for a stroll along the water. There are cafes and a market all within very easy walking distance. It is also a very easy walk to Old Town or the Saturday Market. Our suite was the most luxurious and comfortable room we have ever had anywhere. I can't say enough about the comfort of the bed and linens. The toiletries are scrumptious and you could just about drown in the tub. They have wine hour every evening from 5:00-6:00 in the lobby. You visit with other guests and enjoy some wine selections and yummy treats from the restaurant. Jess and Matt are usually the hosts for the wine hour and they are fantastic. They are so friendly and genuinely care about every aspect of your visit. They will do whatever it takes to ensure that your stay is memorable and that you have a wonderful time in their city. The King Tide Restaurant is not your typical hotel restaurant. We ate in the restaurant multiple times during our stay because it is so very good. The food is fabulous. The calamari with peppers and olives is delicious. The small plates and sides are all generous and very, very good. The grilled sour dough is from a local bakery and a must try. And, the desserts are all worth the calories. Jess is the restaurant manager and the epitome of friendly professionalism. We also had the pleasure of being served by Conn, Anna Marie, and Laina. I don't know what secret method this hotel has for hiring only the very best, but their staff shows their commitment to accomplishing this goal. Matt, the front desk manager, is the absolute best. He always greets you by name, asks about your adventures, and can make some great suggestions if you aren't quite sure how to spend you time. He clearly loves his job and this hotel and wants to make sure that every stay is so good that you'll want to come back. This was our second stay at the RiverPlace and we are already thinking about our next visit. I can't imagine ever staying anyplace else in Portland.

“A Pretty Good Portland Stay”

I booked a 2-night solo staycation through Chase’s “The Edit” program, which is a “curated, hand-picked” list of properties with extra benefits. Overall, I had a positive experience and would likely return, but it more “met expectations” than exceeded. Valet parking is $55 (I think), so I opted for street parking a block away. If my car attracted break-ins, I’d have chosen valet. Walking in to the lobby I was greeted and check-in was pleasant (I think Oliver helped me, if I have that right he was great!). As part of The Edit benefits, I was given a room upgrade to a King Suite facing the courtyard. I also was able to check out late (3pm!), and was given a $100 property credit and free breakfast (“for two”). The front desk associates and valets were friendly and helpful. I made it in time for the complimentary happy hour and enjoyed a Campari spritz (NA options available). The front desk associate gave me a few recommendations for dinner and let me know about a local event happening just outside the hotel. If you’re visiting Portland, I highly recommend venturing into downtown or other Portland neighborhoods for food, mainly because Portland has outstanding restaurants and they’re not usually in hotels ;). I’m unfortunately very sensitive to noise and feel anxious if rooms seem dirty, so hotels can be a gamble. A tote was included as another Edit benefit (promise this isn’t a Chase ad). My room was thoughtfully decorated, if a bit dated, and my routine of wiping commonly used surfaces didn’t result in a gross level of dirt. That being said, there were a few things that icked me out, including an extremely dusty landline (not that I really needed it) and mold that has infiltrated the shower grout. Otherwise, I was able to relax and enjoyed a cave-like darkness and lots of quiet! I could hear doors open and close a bit in the hallway but otherwise, truly nothing which let me sleep soundly. The temperature control worked great, the bed was very comfortable and there was an extra pillow in the closet with two “one size fits all” robes. There were two medium sized tvs in the suite that you can apparently connect your phone to, but I didn’t try. I ate dinner and breakfast in the restaurant (King’s Tide) and was satisfied. I chose safe-ish bets like linguine with butter, garlic and shrimp and then eggs Benedict, which were enjoyable, but not quite Portland caliber. The waitstaff was attentive enough during dinner, less so for breakfast but there probably were fewer staff at that time. Was the hotel worth the $276/night rate? Not to me, but seasonal rates + location might explain that. I’m giving it a 4/5 but it might be closer to a 3.75 mainly because of heightened expectations I had for an “Edit” hotel and I think moldy grout at this price level is not acceptable. I’d be open to staying again if the circumstances were right but I’m not planning on it.

It was our anniversary so we splurged on a suite. The staff was delightful - friendly and competent. Sadly this room at least has been allowed to deteriorate. The privacy curtains are mostly missing (blackout shades are still there) or falling apart, the shower had serious mildew (disguised as rustic tile). The door between the bedroom and living room was removed at some point. The windows are old and poor quality - one was out of its track - and they are dirty and covered in cobwebs. Lots of road noise at night since the windows are old and poorly fitting. Someone with a critical eye needs to look over these rooms and the owners need to put in some capital to improve/refresh. The current ownership appears to have bought the hotel in 2015 and they appear to be collecting on its previous strong reviews without investing the necessary funds for maintenance.
