My husband & I flew in the day before & left Vegas in the morning. It took about 5 hours including many scenic stops. The weather was anywhere from 30 at night to 80 during day. We packed winter coats, hats, gloves as well as t-shirts and shorts, with layers in between so we were prepared. We quickly checked into Cabin 507 mid-afternoon which is literally 2 minutes from the rim, down a short path. All the hiking trails are available pretty much from top of rim. What a view!! The cabins are doubled up, meaning there's a duplicate cabin attached by a locking door and not the best soundproofing. Good for families, larger groups. This was our 1st trip to area and we planned for hiking and 1 day of 90 minute horseback riding (Canyon trail riders on site, separate review). Staff was pretty friendly and rangers helpful. The cabin was clean as far as the 'rustic' environment we expected. Everything inside and out is going to be dusty. We're boaters, campers, hikers, skiers, you name it, so aren't expecting white glove, daily housekeeping service. Each cabin had a little porch, no table, a metal (no cushions) bench. Inside you have 2 Queen beds (soft, ok sleep), pillows too soft, kitchen table with only 2 heavy (not very comfy) chairs (2 worked fine for us, but not for larger parties), gas fireplace on timer, no A/C, box and also ceiling fan, mini fridge, microwave, mini pod coffee maker, no safe, blowdryer, extra sink in separate room we used to watch dishes, 1 nightstand, no bureau. There were some hangers on a rack, a few places to charge phones, bar soap at sink, soap, shampoo, lotion &conditioner dispensers, no body wash. Towels for 4, recycle bins and ones outside nearby too. To pack lighter, we bought less clothing and did laundry. Getting detergent at nearby town grocer. $2.50 load washer/ dryer $.25 for 4 mins. Some of the machines were out of order. We didn't use daily housekeeping and bought groceries and a cooler and made our breakfast, lunch and some dinners at cabin. We had pizza 1 day and it was just ok at their cafe, but also enjoyed Elk Chili at lodge itself during another meal. We had a car and nearby parking to cabins, no assigned spaces. We didn't use shuttles while there. We did stop off at some of the observation points along the way and sometimes had lunch at the picnic tables. Lots of ponderosa pines and other shade available. Very clean well kept area with lots of wildlife. Please do not feed!! The Jays and squirrels will beg and possibly bite you. Insects a non issue at this time of year. The views were spectacular and we're glad we stayed in park close to hiking and the rim in general.

We arrived a little early but our room was ready (second floor in the Sunset Lodge). Room is well appointed and coffee machine excellent. Be warned - the WiFi is very slow and intermittent, and if you need WiFi, head to the main reception. Shower is good. Bed comfy. You are less than a 5 min walk to the edge of the rim and wow views of the hoodoos. It was very cold when we were there - even colder the next day when it was down to 15 degrees and even colder in the wind chill, and we had a sprinkling of snow - but the room was warm enough. Parking is a 2 min walk to the room. Dinner is a 2 min walk to reception. We didn’t use any of the other facilities except for dinner (reviewed separately). Bought breakfast from the market shop which was great (muffins and coffee). The park wasn’t at all busy on our visit - the cold may have put people off. If you have time, recommend the drive up to Rainbow Point and do stop at the various parking spots on the way down (we couldn’t walk to Yovimpa Point at the tip because it was so cold and very very windy). Really enjoyed the trip and this is the place to stay. We arrived after lunch and left after breakfast the next day and that was enough for us. We like walking short trails and are not hikers, so this was long enough for us.
