The long drive up the hill from Sirolo suggests there is something special waiting at the top and the setting and atmosphere of the Hotel Monteconero does not disappoint. The courtyard and its church, not to mention the view down to the Adriatic 500 metres below, are unique features in a very striking location. The hotel itself only partially reflects this glamorous promise, however, living a little on past glories : the restaurant somewhat sterile, the breakfast buffet very standard fare, the bedroom spacious and clean but uninspired, the bathroom maintaining the old Italian tradition of an occasional unwelcome lingering smell. But then you look again from your balcony over the blue Adriatic and the coastline and Marche countryside below and these minor irritations are forgotten. There’s a good pool and well-maintained hiking trails from the door, and it’s only a five-minute drive back down the hill to the delightful town of Sirolo with its multitude of restaurants. Then the retreat back up the hill is all the more appreciated.

Lovely location almost on top of the hill, Superb view of the landscape and the coast. The hotel has an ancient church inside its area. The hotel is member of the chain Charme and Relax Hotels. Silence and relax are a plus. There's also a swimming pool. Nearby the hotel there's a pub that sometimes can be disturbing because of the music, but in generalit stops around midnight. As for the food, nothing exceptional: the kitchen offers several dishes that are repeated during the week; maybe a little change could be appreciated. The place is not pointed towards young people (no pizza, no music), but some young people may appreciate it. If you want it you can go down to Sirolo village. For those that love trekking there are several paths nearby, you could reach the sea on foot.

The receptionists were super efficient, very helpful and went beyond to help us. However the rooms were very basic, needing renovating and some TLC. Some much for a COVID clean there was thick dust on top of the head board and the light switches. No drinks as stated in the fridge, which actually wasn't that cold. However, a lovely swimming pool and you could place a deposit on the pool towels and get when returned. You could also hire tennis rackets and balls and pay for an hour, you do have to put up with a horrible smell from the sewage tanks. Great walks straight out of the hotel, you can get a map from the hotel, but these are clearly marked. Sensible shoes are required. The hotel does provide a free shuttle bus to a stop near the beach in the morning and collects either at lunch or later in the day. Otherwise it is over an hours walk down hill and you need to be fit to get back. The receptionist did call us because we got told the wrong leaving time from the beach, so the bus waited for us, which was great. We did have dinner one night in the hotel but we found the restaurant lacking in atmosphere, waiters no social skills and the food bland. It was like an old people's care home, not very inviting at all. At breakfast you did help yourself with face masks on and plenty of hand gel. It wasn't very exciting and limited of choice, pretty average. The bar staff in the evening were very polite and helpful and at lest they were happy in their job unlike those serving dinner. There's no coffee or tea making facilities in the rooms, which it really needs. More could be done with the hotel grounds and use of it, especially with the scenery. Could be made a lovely hotel with attention to detail and more investment. A great yoga retreat maybe in the grounds?
