This was our 7th or 8th time in Akumal Bay Beach and Wellness resort, and I hope to be back. Quite a few of our friends visit it now based on our recommendations, and also keep coming back. The rooms are clean, the food is plentiful, the staff is friendly. Many thanks to Enrique at the reception and Elvira (PR desk) for sorting out a little hiccup that we had with our room. Aurora (egg station at the buffet) is as cheerful as always The Lobby Bar makes perfect cappuccinos. Lots of fruits and vegetables, and freshly grilled meats and fish in the main buffet. The sea life is still pretty colourful - lots of fish and an occasional turtle, one can snorkel around reefs right off the beach. This also means that the sea bed and the beach are somewhat rocky, which is fine by me. Thank you, Akumal Bay!

“Excellent resort overall with some negatives”

My wife and I enjoy enjoyed a week at the resort and definitely will consider returning on a future vacation. Our accommodations were a junior suite in Building 1. I thought that I'd list the pros and cons based on our experience. Pros - beautiful grounds with easy access to the ocean for swimming and snorkelling - extremely helpful, friendly, and caring staff - wide variety of delicious food and easy accommodation of guest's food constraints - reservations NOT required at à la carte restaurants - interesting and fun activities and excellent live music in the evenings - plentiful loungers and palapas by the beach and around the pool - close by attractions that can be reached by inexpensive "collective" taxis - efficient transport from and to the airport (approximately 90 from Cancun) organized by the tour operator Cons - in our view, the room was not up to standard and needs to be refurbished. Also, inexplicably, chairs and even a clock were missing. - ocean directly in front of the resort is a bit hard to access because of stones exposed by erosion. Beach at nearby Secrets resort is in better condition. - ocean was a bit rough at this time of year. Only 1 day had a green flag (other days red and yellow) which made snorkelling less enjoyable than expected. - although the resort goes to great efforts to remove, Sargassum along the beach and in the ocean can be off-putting.

The reviews here were great here so we gave it a shot. We found it hard to get into the ocean because of all the rocks in the water. The rooms were dated, and was just ok. The staff was amazing and the resort itself was really nice, and they gave us a nice little treat for our 3rd anniversary. Lots of friendly iguanas 🦎. The nighttime entertainment was great. The spa was nice but a little pricey. If you travel into Playa Del Carmen to check out 5th avenue the vendors know the Akumal Bay bracelets so they say they know you from the resort and they’re there on their day off to help their family business, watch out for this.

Thought we would try this hotel based on the high reviews but sad to say it fell short of expectations on peace/wellness and 4-5 star experience. Staff, food and drinks were very good but our room and quality of communal toilets, beach loungers, cabanas etc were 3 star quality. We were in building 4 and room was definitely in need of refurbishment. Furniture was falling to bits, shower hose wouldn’t stay up and leaked, plastic toilet seat moved about, wardrobe rail was 7ft high so the average person would struggle to hang anything and honestly the noisiest place we’ve stayed, and we are well travelled. There is no sound proofing, footsteps echo through the ceiling from above, toddler crying next door, doors banging and building refurb works going on. We had to think of ingenious ways to block out the light at night coming through the bathroom windows and around the door as this didn’t improve sleep quality. The beach and snorkeling were great at the Secrets end, but unfortunately loungers taken by 8am reserved with towels. Loungers only have reclining position, you can’t lie down, and the palapas and cabanas are in poor repair often missing sun shades on top. If they want people to avoid using sunscreen to preserve sea life, they need to provide proper shade. We were in Akumal prior to this in 2017 and the resort we stayed in then was a much better choice for less money and 5 star.
