The Pousada is the result of the restoration of a Cistercian Monastery from the 12th century, a work of distinguished architect, Eduardo Souto de Moura, winner of the 2011 Pritzker Prize, the most important worldwide architecture prize. The Pousada is located only 17 minutes from Peneda Gerês National Park and is enveloped in fascinating scenery. During your stay, you can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool, the tennis court and leave your vehicle in the car park. For dining, we offer a restaurant and a bar with a fantastic fireplace, great for lighter meals on winter days.
In winter, take a stroll through the hotel's cloisters and read a book next to the fantastic fireplace at the Pousada de Amares' bar. Dine at the restaurant considered one of the most beautiful in Portugal. It offers traditional Minhota cuisine—take the opportunity to discover the flavours of Minho. On foot, you can go bird watching, hiking or even visit the hot springs—all of which can be arranged with the help of our 24-hour reception.
In summer, take the opportunity to relax on the terrace with a view of the reflecting pool and the meadows at the unique outdoor swimming pool in the country, completely made of marble from the area, with fantastic views of the gardens.

“Surprise, it’s a 800 year old monastery in Amares! ”
Don’t let your first impression, as you pull up to Pousada Mosterio de Amares, make you think you’re in the wrong place! This venue is an 800 yr old relic that has been modernized with all the conveniences you would/will need. It could be a retreat venue, a place to get away, and really relax. ... more
