Easter in the Mediterranean

With Easter falling late in the Spring season this year, it's a great opportunity to catch some Mediterranean sun. Although the sea water may not be as hot as we'd like it, the beaches won't be overcrowded and it's also an opportunity to explore the local culture and Easter traditions.

Here are a few handpicked Easter destinations:

Turkey
Over the last few years Turkey has become a very popular Mediterranean destination thanks to its value for money, great weather and natural beauty. If you want to avoid the crowds in August, Easter is a perfect time of the year with average temperatures reaching the mid twenties. With Turkey being a predominently Muslin country don't expect to see many Easter celebrations, but if it's beautiful beaches and  a time to relax you're after then Turkey is a fantantic option.

Greece
Easter is by far the most important festival of the Greek year, and it's a great time to see the moving religious ceremonies, which you may want to note are mainly held at midnight and accompanied by fireworks. Temperatures in April reach an average of 20ºC so it's also perfect for catching some rays!

If you're heading out to Greece you'll more than likely see the locals playing with red eggs! The game is called Tsougrisma and involves 2 player,s each holding an egg and lightly tapping it against their opponents! The goal is to crack the opponent's egg and the winner is said to have luck during the following year!

Costa del Sol
With daily direct flights from many UK airports to Malaga, the Costa del Sol is a popular option with average temperatures reaching between 16ºC - 20ºC. By April almost all resorts will be open and as always full of bars, restaurants and evening entertainment. If you have time and fancy a break from the beach we definitely recommend heading out to one of the larger cities such as Seville or Malaga to see the extravagant religious parades, but be warned the locals take it very seriously and get quite emotional!
