For a real traditional and romantic break you might want to consider heading to Germany where Christmas gifts are not mass-produced but are actually craftwork of real quality. It's also home to some of the most popular Christmas markets in Europe, with
Berlin alone playing host to around sixty every year. Also in Germany, is the Nuremberg Christmas market famed as one of the oldest and most authentic in Germany and renowned for its 'Zwetschgenmännle', gingerbread made from nuts, plums, raisins, and figs... a great souvenir or gift.

The Christmas market in
Copenhagen takes place in the enchanting Tivoli Gandens, Europe's oldest amusement park. Here you'll find beautifully decorated stalls selling food and gifts and if that's not enough you've also got rollercoasters, rides and an ice rink. Don't forget to try glögg, a mulled wine with a splash of spirit... guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit.

Advent in Vienna is a magical and nostalgic place set against the backdrop of the beautiful architecture and amongst the romantic streets. The main Christmas market in Vienna is held in Rathausplatz, the square in front of the city hall, where you'll find more than 150 stalls selling gifts, Christmas decorations, gluhwein (mulled wine) and hot chestnuts.

These are just a few of our favourites but there are many other charming cities including Budapest, Prague and Brussels that offer a delightful city break with a pretty Christmas market atmosphere. Most Christmas Markets start in the last week of November and run through to Christmas Eve or a day or two before. They are usually open every day from 10am to about 8 or 9 pm.
