“Good Location”

I have stayed at the Hostel Suite Obelisco several times and I am always pleased. It is really close to metro stations, restaurants, parks and historical monuments. Breakfast is great. it's an older building with a cool old elevator and several floors of rooms

“Good Location and Value, Just Choose Your Room”

Background: During an overnight layover in BA en route to Ushuaia to join a 10-day cruise to Antarctica, I stayed at this hostel along Ave Corrientes. (Btw, take note that, down the same street, there's another accommodation with a similar name: Hotel Ibis Suites Obelisco. That one is a hotel, while this one is a hostel. Big difference.) PROS: Location... location... location is its best asset. The hostel derives its name from the Obelisk at its doorstep at Ave 9 de Julio, and is mere steps away from either the Carlos Pelligrini Subway Stn and the 9 de Julio Subway Stn. The narrow façade leads to a narrow corridor up a flight of stairs to the main reception area. An old-fashioned lift serves four floors. There's a kitchen, common area, library, bar and free WiFi. Averaging to about £8/night for a single room to £9-10 pp/night for dormitories, it is of excellent value compared to its peers. (The hostel is unrated.) Surely, cheaper accommodation can be had (down to £4/night) but then you'll be sacrificing location or amenities. CONS: A few come to mind -- Understand that many of the negatives relate to it being a very old building. First, entering the premises through two doors (with intercom) is a bit annoying, but is a security feature. Next, there's only one lift, which is quite old. It won't work if people don't close the outside grill gate, so you'll be forced to wait or else climb a few long flights of stairs. Second, noise insulation is an issue. The thin walls do not filter out loud snoring neighbours, chatty blokes in the hallway, party animals in the common room or normal traffic sounds. Third, the rooms are very, very basic. My single room has one table, one bed and one fan. That's it. Much worse, some rooms do not have windows or fans, so can be a sweatbox at times. Next, there's no night custodial staff so it's a gamble if you share a W/C (toilet) with a messy neighbor. No toiletries. No self-serve laundry. Oh, the third-floor W/C has a large, door-sized window where anybody can peer into while you're "doing your private business." Fourth, the kitchen is very small, gets easily crowded, lacks enough supplies and thus not conducive for cooking in. The included Continental breakfast is nothing fancy (at least nothing to write home about) but is on the minimal side. Last, though free, the WiFi is slow, does not reach the top floors and accessible only from the public areas. TIP: Ask for a room with a window and fan/heating (depending on the season). Verdict: There you have it --- The pros balance out the cons. The big pros are its central location and excellent value. But the negatives, though minor, are not insignificant and need to be addressed. Overall, YGWYPF. It's a perfect basic accommodation in central BA for non-fussy budget travelers. For the rest, it is adequate for a few nights but, for longer stays, there are better options elsewhere. Your call. Grade B+. .

Some of the people behind the counter were not really busy with their job (they seemed a bit drugged in my opinion).
