Our visit to Cuba had two locations, five days in Havana and then three days out here to relax and ‘recover’ from the exploring, education and experience. The building, rooms, area and location were all lovely, the building I would say is striking in its appearance with maintenance ongoing almost all the time. Our room was huge with lots of features that were gorgeous. Super clean and well kept all the time we were there. On arrival via car we had help with our luggage but were told, sadly and despite arrangements being made, that we could not check in until 16:00, it kind of didn’t matter as we could sit have some lunch and a drink but the way it was handled was a bit rude. The process of check in was a bit confusing, we were asked to sign a form which guaranteed that at the end of our stay we would pay all the extras on card, which was fine but it just felt confusing given how money had been handled everywhere else on the island. The bar staff every day were lovely and despite some unexpected ‘weather’ the place is kept spotless all of the time. The food and drink options are good with a lovely selection of wine too. Whilst we were there on our second day was my wife’s birthday and the team were amazing delivering a cake, decorating the room and signing happy birthday, such a lovely touch. The reception/butler service is a bit Jeckel and Hyde though, day one a bit rude and not that friendly, day two smashing, smiling and so helpful, truly awesome, day three back to day one if not a bit worse. The rest of the staff were amazing all of the time. We did have a slight problem on the last day though that is worth highlighting. Our flight was cancelled not long before we were due to head back to Havana, we simply had to leave that day for home life stuff so found a new flight to book on. Trying to do this over WiFi was so hard we asked if we could use the hotel internet rather than WiFi and were told under no circumstances was this going to happen which was a shame as we were in real need of help at this point. The butler chap was adamant he would not help and we needed to book an extra night then he would help. The hotel WiFi itself is really poor, I guess you cant expect much at the moment in Cuba but we had such good service in our previous hotel it was a bit of a shock. The area has some nice restaurants, the Beatles bar is fun of a night and the beach is beautiful. Sadly the situation in Cuba right now means that many of the glorious places that made up this area are very empty right now, if you do get chance to go then trying to offer them your patronage could save the area. All in all a lovely hotel let down by a few moments where a smile and a bit of help would have made it exceptional.
