We stayed in one of the Mahalini bungalows in Seminyak. The bungalows are located in the small street on the right side of Queen Tandoors restaurant. The bungalows are close to the shopping area and it is a 15 minute walk to the beach. The bungalow we stayed in was nice. It had a big open living space with kitchen and seating area. There was a bedroom downstairs and one upstairs. The bathroom was outside but with enough privacy. In front of the bungalow was a small garden. I liked the open character of the building, feels like living outside. It's not a luxury accomodation, just clean and simple. I think it would be great for families, since there is so much space and you have your own garden. And all that for a very reasonable price.

Well I guess we should start with the positives but I do encourage readers to read this whole review! The location is very central and easy to find in a decent area of Seminyak. The receptionist, Putu, was lovely and very helpful but neither she nor the other lady that I met speak much English (nor French nor German). So sign language and being creative will assist. The bed was very comfortable. The room was quite pleasant but then I started to see things that really let it down badly. There was dried urine on the toilet seat and food waste in the kitchen sink. Under the sink there were a lot of rat droppings and a very unpleasant smell. There were also long hairs on the bathroom sink which was gross. The bracket / holder for the shower head was drilled into the wall just over 7 feet up. A short person or child could never reach this. Having a rubbish bin anywhere in the room / kitchen / bathroom would have been useful!! I was woken around 7am the following morning by building works and lots of men shouting. I had to go to reception in the morning as my water cooler was out of water. The person who came to install it walked in with a lit cigarette in his mouth and my room was gross after that. All in all not a great stay and I would not come back. If they fixed these issues and cared a bit more the place has great potential. I hope the management read this and act on it.

I stayed at Mahalini Villa 1 at Jl. Drupadi No.6, Seminyak for a week recently. I notice in another review here mentioning the position near Queen Tandoor restaurant. This is not correct. There are 4 x Different Mahalini Villas all owned/run by same people. All 4 x villas are in separate locations in Seminyak. Mahalini Villa 1 across the road from Zibiru Restaurant and about 30 metres from Lacalaca restaurant and bar. The villas are traditional thatched roof style which I really liked. Open living room and kitchen, outdoor bathroom (with roof). The bedroom is the only sealed room. I really liked the villas. But let me add some disclaimers... I am a guy and I wasn't bothered that the kitchen sink and bathroom sink was a bit dirty. The glasses and plates etc in the cupboard were dirty. Again this didn't bother me. It was easy to wash a couple of glasses and wipe down the sink and basin. However a couple of other friends stayed here too in an identical bungalow next to mine. They were a couple and the girl wasn't impressed with the dirtiness. We could all agree though that the actual style of the villas was great, the grounds and garden of the villa complex were beautiful as was the garden of the individual villas. There are some 2+ bedroom villas which don't come with private pool, but there is a massive shared pool in the villa grounds. All the pools were very clean. My air-conditioning in the bedroom was great (cold), good mosquito net over bed was pretty new and didn't have any holes, the fridge in the kitchen was good. The villa provides fresh water (big 20 litre bottle on dispenser). There staff were friendly, but not enough staff for such a big place. They don't clean the villa or rooms or replace towels/sheets etc, BUT will certainly do so if you ask. For me it didn't matter - there were two towels on arrival which was fine for me for a week as I'd also brought a beach towel with me. I don't change my sheets every day at home so that didn't bother me. The location is excellent, just down the road - 30 metres from Eat Street (Laksamana/Oberoi). The villas were very quiet and peaceful so easy to get a good night sleep. The toilet didn't flush properly in that the seal didn't close to let the cistern fill up so it just trickled water all the time. I just turned off the stop tap and used a pot from the kitchen which I filled with water in the bathroom to flush the toilet - not ideal, but worked fine. If you don't mind that it's a bit dirty (kitchen/bathroom sinks), then this is a great place. I don't think you could find a traditional Bali villa with a private pool in such a great location for this price. Personally I think it's a bargain! I will definitely stay here again on my next trip. If the owners spent some money fixing a few things and employed more staff to clean etc then they could charge a lot more money for these villas. Although there were other people staying here (all ages) it certainly wasn't full, or even half full. I have rated this property as 'average', but only because it was a bit dirty and the toilet didn't work properly. If not for this I would have rated it 'very good'. I know I'm repeating myself here, but for me this place was perfect! There is also a Spa business right at the front of the villa on Jl Drupadi which is not associated with the villas, but the Spa building juts a little into the carpark area of the villa. I had the best massages I've ever had in Bali here and they were very cheap. Friends also tried the Spa and said the same thing. I'm not sure how full this place would be in high season, but in low season you could just rock up here and negotiate a great price. My friends had booked via one of the booking websites and it was a bit more expensive for them - but still cheap for what you get (in my opinion). I have a friend who lives in Bali - I had him check out the villa for me and book directly which is why I may have got such a good price. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to mention prices here so I haven't... I spend more for dinner each night (at nice middle price restaurants) than I did per night for my villa so that should give an indication. Free Wifi worked well too!
