We had a beautiful time at Quinta da Comporta. We stayed in one of their 3 bedroom 3 1/2 bath with private pool houses- it was magnificent. The hotel setting is beautiful, it sits on a rice field. We used their bikes ( beach is an easy ride) we used their beautiful spa (massage and body scrub were great. Pool at our house and in resort were heated! Breakfast was included and very good. Dinner was very good but menu is limited, however there are super restaurants on the beach and in town, nearby. ( sublime beach club and Cafe Comporta were awesome) .

“Gorgeous hotel but staff needs a pep talk”

We really liked this hotel! We were on a Backroads trip and were so grateful to come to this oasis after a long day of biking. The rooms are very spacious and thoughtfully designed. The pool and spa area are gorgeous. The gardens are lovely. Breakfast buffet and dinners were excellent. The town shopping is a stone's throw from the hotel (go out the back gate near the spa). The reason I am giving this hotel 4 stars is that the staff is all around surly as stated in other reviews. I don’t know if it’s due to poor management, low pay, long hours, etc, but the staff is universally grumpy and not welcoming. The only pleasant and helpful staffer is Rodrigo who worked the pool solo on a very busy afternoon and did it with a smile on his face.

Quinta da Comporta came highly recommended to us over another well-known option in the area by someone who has stayed at both. We chose it for the design and the promise of a distinctive, experience-led stay. The setting, architecture, and overall design are exceptional. The property creates a real sense of place and surpassed expectations. Where it fell short was hospitality and follow-through. For a property positioned at this level, the gap was noticeable. Staff often came across as indifferent, and the small misses added up. A few specifics: Arrival On arrival, our driver wasn’t sure where to go, and there wasn’t a buggy available to transfer us, although our belongings were handled. None of this is a big deal in isolation, but together it set an unpolished tone. Returning late in the evenings also felt impersonal. Housekeeping Housekeeping was inconsistent. The team knocked multiple times while we were in the room and, more than once, didn’t return when asked. On one day, the room hadn’t been cleaned by mid-afternoon. We appreciated that it was ultimately corrected, but it shouldn’t have happened. We also saw housekeeping carts left outside our staircase for long stretches on multiple days, which detracted from the otherwise beautiful walkways. Breakfast Breakfast was plentiful, but the quality didn’t match what we’d expect at this level. Service was passive, and we had to flag the team down multiple times throughout the meal. Dinner Dinner service was slow. Our main course took close to an hour to arrive, and the food didn’t justify the price or setting. We also had trouble getting a confident wine recommendation. Spa The facility was impressive. Treatments were a highlight and worth booking. The hammam was out of service for the duration of our stay. Transportation You’ll want a rental car or reliable taxi plan. There’s no ride share, and that’s generally true in Comporta. There is, however, a beach shuttle provided by the property. Bottom line Visually, this is one of the most beautiful properties we’ve seen in the region, and the gym and spa are among the best-designed facilities we’ve experienced. But the hospitality didn’t match the setting, and the service inconsistencies pulled the experience down. Some of what we experienced echoes points raised in other guest reviews, especially around hospitality, so it didn’t feel entirely isolated. I’d still consider it for a short stay in the area. The team acknowledged the gaps, and it sounds like they’re working to close them.
