The imposing San Rafael Glacier should be admire in peace and harmony; it is an amphitheatre of mountains and age-old ice formations that gives us a new dimension of the history of the planet and of man's sojourn on earth. This glacier, which was called San Rafael in honour of the Jesuit priest Juan García Tao, who discovered it in 1620, is considered to be the active glacier that is nearest to the Equator. This National Park was declared Unesco World Biosphere Reserve in 1978, and contains a varied marine fauna and a flora that live in perfect ecological equilibrium. The glacier is born in the Northern Ice Field in the Andes Mountains and covers 15 kilometres from its birthplace on Mount San Valentín until it sinks its ice floes in the placid waters of the San Rafael Lagoon.
