It was initially known as Someseni Airport as it is located 5.6 mi east of the city centre in the Someseni area, which is now within the Cluj-Napoca city limits. In terms of traffic, it is the third airport in Romania, after Bucharest Henri Coanda and Timisoara. Its size and location (on the European route E576 and close to A3 Transylvania Motorway) makes it the main airport in Transylavnia (north-western Romania).

This airport has 3 terminals, Terminal 1 is hardly used anymore and Terminal 2 and 3 are connected internally. Departures are divided between T2 and T3. Several bus lines connect the airport to the centre of Málaga, nearby towns and various Andalusian cities. Estimated travel time: 15 minutes to the centre of Málaga. A suburban train line connects the T3 with several key locations on the Costa del Sol: Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Torremolinos and Málaga centre. . Estimated travel time: 10 minutes to Torremolinos and 12 minutes to the centre of Málaga. The airport has a well-signposted taxi rank outside the arrivals area of Terminal T3.
