Not many UK reviews of this hotel and it’s not really surprising as it’s off the tourist route and mainly frequented with Germans. I will write this review objectively to give as much info to potential English visitors as possible regarding our experience. It’s a family/holiday hotel, popular for people visiting the nearby Bostalsee and all the associated amenities of which there are many. It’s sited in good sized grounds within a rural location with plenty of secure parking. We were there for 4 nights in a junior suite visiting family so used it as a base and place to relax. It’s set at the edge of the largish village of Bösen a short 5 min drive from the A61 motorway, about 5hrs drive from Zeebrugge. Set in scenic rolling countryside with a tennis court, archery, indoor swimming pool and spa it’s definitely German country house flavour but not pretentious in any way. Most rooms seemed to have a balcony so you at least have a bit of personal outside space. Our room was clean and nicely furnished with good quality but slightly shabby chic furniture in a very comfortable way. Bathroom was again, slightly older but very well maintained and clean. We ate breakfast everyday at the hotel and had 2 evening meals. Buffet breakfast was very comprehensive with lots of choice and cooked to a very good standard. You had the option to eat inside or out on the large terraced area which was very popular. Evening meals were also served either inside or out with attentive service from the well trained and friendly waiting staff. Food was local, interesting and plentiful. The local Bostalsee was an unexpected surprise. Within a few mins walk there is beach swimming with a large water slide, boat hire, bike hire. A couple of nice bars and restaurants as well. A short drive, or 40 min walk to the other side of the lake gives access to a centre park location with the standard indoor/outdoor amenities, more bike and boat options. This is where you get the 4 seater bikes from. Overall we found the prices for food, amenities and drinks very reasonable. I suspect this is because it is off the main tourist route. Any downsides? Well a few but very minor really. Because it’s a holiday hotel the surrounding area can be a little more noisy than you might expect but we were there at the first weekend of the summer holiday season. Smoking is much more prevalent here than in the UK and laws are more relaxed in Germany so the terrace could get a bit smoky at times, which you wouldn’t normally get in the UK as food and diners are well separated. English is not widely spoken in the hotel either which surprised us. It may have just been the season though. We got by fine with a little German and the staff were very kind at our attempts!! Overall we loved it, great food, reasonable prices, brilliant staff at the hotel (especially Patrick who was the perfect host), a nice relaxed holiday atmosphere and lots to do. We will be back to this area many times over the next few years and will have no hesitation of using this hotel every time.
