“Basic But Good”

Clean well/run hotel in a quiet location. Basic small beds but when pushed together are fine! Bathroom rather cramped but fully functional. Very friendly staff and an excellent breakfast. Bowling alley in the basement!

First impressions weren't great, this hotel is on a busy road (albeit set back a bit) and looked like the modern conference hotel that it is rather than the former brewery we were expecting from its name. But it is professionally run with helpful reception staff, decent-sized bedrooms, bathrooms in which everything works (not a given in this part of Germany) and good wifi. It is, however, quite a walk from the centre of town, although some of the walk is through a park which is preferable to walking beside heavy traffic. The railway station isn't far. There's an excellent, secure bike shed, on-site 10 pin bowling and the restaurant produces filling food at a reasonable price. Not a bad choice if you're driving because there's a large car park.

“Friendly and comfortable”

Checking into a middle class hotel in a provincial German town well after midnight is often easier said than done and many such establishments insist that you pick up your keys beforehand. The Brauhof however has a friendly night porter and we didn't even need to ring the bell when we arrived at 00.45am (we called ahead to let them know we'd be arriving late). The large private parking lot meant we were able to park our van full of equipment directly in front of the door and off the street. The rooms were comfortable, though the internet didn't work very well (this is a common problem in German hotels). The town centre is a 15 minute walk away. Breakfast was decent and the staff pleasant and friendly. Prices are very reasonable and the restaurant looked OK, though we didn't have the opportunity to eat there. If you want a clean and comfortable hotel in Torgau to explore the old town and admire the amazing Renaissance castle (complete with a dry moat inhabited by bears), built on an outcrop overlooking the river Elbe, where Russian and American troops joined up in the final months of WW2, then this would be the place. I'd also recommend a visit to our concert venue, the lovely Kulturbastion, which has a wide-ranging high quality cultural program all year round.
