You really have to make an effort to end up in the remote and forgotten little town of Bad Blankenburg - it was my starting point for a cycling trip over Easter, across the Thueringer Wald and into beautiful Franconia. I guess Hotel Zum Steinhof delivered what you can reasonably expect in these parts. The room was okay and good value, service was friendly, breakfast was good. A major letdown was that the restaurant was closed by 8.30 pm and the bar at about 9 .Quoth the barkeeper: "I close down when there are no guests." An interesting approach that left me no choice but the "Bimmelbahn" restaurant at the train station, which served up the worst Schnitzel I've had in a a long time. I was really very happy when I left Bad Blankenburg - it wasn't really the hotel's fault though.

Since the breakfast is included the price is in line with many of the hotels in the area. Unfortunately there is absolutely no view as there is the backside of a grocery store in the front of the hotel, plus some very typical apartment building blocks surrounding the hotel. Initially when looking for the hotel we thought we had taken a wrong turn as we did not expect it to be in such an odd location. There was definitely some creative photography done when visiting the Hotel web site directly. On the plus side, there is a nice walking park across the Schwarza (river) and it is in a good location to explore the Thuringen Wald area. There is a very nice bicycle/walking path that goes from very near the hotel, all along the Schwarza river, for many miles of forest riding. The room was clean, basic, laminate type furniture, comforters. Bath room had the typical liquid soap dispensers, although the one in the shower was empty, towels, hmmmm, could use a bit of work here, they were NOT plush, but… did the job. Stayed here 2 nights and there was no room cleaning after the first night so had to ask at reception for a spare roll of toilet paper on the second day. Due to the nature of the rooms, when other guests come in, the noise is definitely noticeable. Free 6 hours of internet, after 6 hours, there’s a charge. Breakfast buffet was fairly good, typical cold cuts, boiled eggs (no scrambled), cheese, coffee, breads , jams, cereals, yogurts, etc. Ate at the hotel 1 night and my dish was ok, but my wife’s steak was unchewable, did receive an ice cream dish at no charge as compensation. Staff spoke some English and was very friendly and helpful. Free parking in front of the hotel. Grab a bottle of Siegmundiner Krauter Likor at the grocery store across the street, good stuff for cold nights.
