An amazing opportunity to stay in stilted accommodation on a swamp inhabited by crocodile, snakes, frogs & many birds including Ospreys & Vultures. In reality you are very safe as we saw only one frog, in our bathroom! & lots of birds mainly because we accepted an offer from Alexi, one of the staff, who rowed us out onto the swamp at dawn - a fantastic experience and an exceptionally nice man. Having paid for the accommodation it was an annoying surprise to find out we had to pay a further 20cuc (£15) to be taken by speedboat to the accommodation- you have no other choice but to pay 😠 We were greeted at Reception by Dieomi who was lovely and welcomedus warmly, & tried very hard in broken English to say the bridge between the rooms & the restaurant was damaged by a hurricane storm so could only be reached by Alexi, yet again rowing us, & everyone else. We were encouraged to visit the Indian village and drink at the bar on another part of the complex only to find the bar closes at 16:30 !!! Having just driven all day to get there it was infuriating to then find we couldn’t even get a glass of water. (My advice- take it, & snacks, with you.) We spoke to Dieomi who called upon Alexi to row us to the restaurant where, unable to return to our room, we stayed until dinner @ 19:00. I’m afraid I found the food awful. Again there’s no alternative so if you’re on a budget take food with you. Our room was nicely laid out with one bedroom, bathroom, air conditioning, a tv- at first wouldn’t work until we investigated & found out the remote didn’t have any batteries, only 3 channels and a poor signal ( not that that mattered) The fridge was unplugged so warm and empty- no water here either- something the management could consider to squeeze even more money out of a tourist? or dare I say it-complimentary! There are notices asking you to consider the delicate ecology and environment & behave responsibly with regards to litter. It would therefore be prudent to stop some of the staff from chucking loaves of stale bread and the remains of their dinner into the precious ecological swamp! Breakfast was limited to coffee, a very small plate of fruit, an omelette- whether you want one or not, bread and a small pat of butter. Unimaginative & sparse. We asked for more butter & honey. The bar server was very friendly. Dieomi was lovely & very helpful but it was Alexi who made our visit worthwhile. He was extremely polite, friendly, helpful and charming. Having worked there 28 yrs I can’t imagine why he’s not in charge. He obviously loves the place and I can see he would make positive changes and improvements. Thank you again Alexi for everything you did for us.
