For my 76th birthday, my wife Maureen and I spent two unforgettable nights at the beautiful Hodson Bay Hotel — and even now, I struggle to adequately describe just how exceptional the experience was. Experienced travellers can sometimes grow weary of the “sameness” of modern hospitality: polished brands, scripted welcomes, and hotels that look impressive but feel impersonal. Hodson Bay is the complete opposite. It is warm, genuine, deeply professional, and refreshingly human. What struck us most was the remarkable unity of purpose among the staff. Every single person we encountered — from housekeeping staff to senior management, from maintenance personnel to restaurant teams — seemed genuinely committed to one thing: ensuring guests feel valued, relaxed and cared for. Many staff wear a small, tasteful badge bearing the letter “R” for “Respect.” That one letter perfectly captures the spirit of the resort. Respect for guests. Respect for colleagues. Respect for the beautiful environment surrounding Lough Ree. Respect for sustainability and the future of our planet. The resort itself is magnificent. Set amidst 145 acres of parkland on the shores of Lough Ree in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, it is both luxurious and wonderfully relaxing. Yet what truly elevates the experience is the sheer range of complimentary activities and amenities available to guests. These included: Swimming pool, spa and gym Aqua aerobics Yoga/Pilates and wellness classes Zumba and spinning Cookery demonstrations Cocktail Masterclasses Craft beer tastings The award-winning Wine & Cheese Experience overlooking Lough Ree The Wine & Cheese evening in the glass conservatory was absolutely delightful, hosted by an award-winning sommelier in a setting of breathtaking beauty. Another highlight was the Cocktail Masterclass hosted by a young barman appropriately named Harry! The cocktails were so exceptional we ordered them again with dinner later that evening. Dining throughout our stay was world-class. We dined in the elegant L’Escale Restaurant as well as the more relaxed Waterfront Bar. In both venues, the food quality, presentation and service were outstanding. Yet despite the sophistication, there was never the slightest trace of pretension — only friendliness, warmth and authentic Irish hospitality. One particularly memorable moment came during dinner on my birthday, when members of staff unexpectedly arrived with complimentary Prosecco, birthday dessert, candles and even a rendition of “Happy Birthday.” It was thoughtful, joyful and deeply touching. The hotel’s own marina also offers Viking cruises along the River Shannon to Clonmacnoise, and demand for these excursions was understandably very high. What impressed me most overall was consistency. I deliberately observed carefully throughout our stay, looking for signs of standards slipping — and I found none. Everything, right down to the smallest details, was maintained to an exceptional standard. This is not simply an excellent hotel. It is a remarkable family-owned Irish resort where people genuinely care about what they do — and it shows in every interaction. We left not only refreshed and inspired, but already planning our return. Highly, highly recommended.
