“Oasis in the heart of wild Tuscany.”

Slow mornings and cooking classes at the best spot in Italy. We absolutely loved the golden light, the endless view and the set up of a private dinner for two. Castello di Vicarello is an oasis in the heart of wild Tuscany.

What a gem of a place. A little perspective: my new husband and I spent only 24 hours here as a part of our honeymoon. We traveled all through Italy for our honeymoon, staying in some spectacular, luxurious places from Villa d'Este on Lake Como to 5-star hotels across the country, and this place surpassed them all. It's a bit off the beaten path (maybe more than a 'bit'), but we loved that 'hidden' and remote quality. We really felt like we stumbled across something special. The grounds are impeccable, really immersive. There are just a few total suites, each one unique. There are spectacular views everywhere. It's somehow simultaneously incredibly private yet there's courteous staff around every corner, attending to any need you might have. The breakfast is ridiculously good, the dinner was amazing. They went above and beyond, even making a secret pineapple cake for my husband because I mentioned to them it's his favorite! Late-night cocktails were one of many highlights - a library/bar/living room becomes a custom, cart-service bar with Claudio giving you a show while creating delicious libations. The wine tasting with Astrid was delightful - she's super knowledgable, funny, and was attentive throughout our stay. Danila was always there anytime we needed anything - more food? Done. New drink? Done. Forgot a bag or jacket in the car? Went out herself in middle of the night to get it and bring it to our room! The incredible team is led by Alessia and Alessandro - what brilliant, kind, warm people. Short of literally holding our hands, Alessia gave us a tour of the grounds, helped us settle in, and made sure we always had what we needed, even helping us plan our next visit. Hearing we were driving to Rome from there, Alessandro took into account my dietary restrictions and packed us a lovely picnic lunch to-go, on the house! Of note, we also met two of owners, Corso and Brando, brothers who also live on the grounds. While opening their 'home' to us, they themselves were helping carry our bags and stepping up to help where needed. In short - we can't wait to return. Again, we stayed at ~16 different places over 3 weeks. This is the only one we NEED to revisit. We're already planning a longer Tuscan escape for 2024, hoping to make Vicarello our home.

It really pains me to write this review as this should have been one of those "once in a lifetime" trips... but unfortunately this place fell short. It is an absolutely beautiful setting and the rooms are gorgeous and well furnished. The service, however, from their guest relations was subpar. Victor seemed very frazzled and almost annoyed any time we would ask a question or if we had to order something to the room or the pool. There was a misunderstanding with a reservation we had and he was almost combative with my mother and I as opposed to understanding and accommodating. The one day we spent at the pool we asked for a jug of water since it was 97 degrees Fahrenheit and it took nearly an hour and 45 minutes for them to deliver water... FYI, no one checks on you at the pool or comes by to see if you need a drink, etc... you have to send a Whatsapp message... wait an insanely long time for them to show up with your order and they charge you 25 Euros for the "delivery fee". As we waited for the water, we decided to order drinks as well since it was now the afternoon. That took an additional 45 minutes to arrive. After the painfully long wait and the audacity to still charge us for that "delivery", we found Victor and told him about the slow service and alerted him that half the chairs at the pool were broken (you have to lay flat the whole time, the incline wasn't working) and he literally was just trying to walk away from me as I was speaking. Also, I found it a little off-putting that not one manager asked us the entire time we were staying there "How are you enjoying your stay? Is everything alright? Is there anything I can do for you?" Don't get me wrong, they smile at you and say good morning but that's it. We went to Venice after and it was nice to have the concierge check in on us on occasion and actually feel like a welcomed guest as opposed to a burden... We stayed in the "Suite Torre" and while it was very nicely decorated, it was unbearably hot at night to the point where you cannot sleep comfortably at all. It is a generously sized room with high ceilings but with that being said there are only two small A/C units on opposite sides of the room which are not nearly adequate enough for the space. I would avoid staying in the peak of summer unless you don't mind sleeping in the heat. My parents stayed in the "Villa Chiesina" which was also nice but they had the same problem with the rooms being very hot at night. The food was good and the waitstaff are very kind. At many of the dinners though it seemed they were really understaffed and stressed. The prices for the wines are over the top which you would expect as you are in the middle of nowhere. But taking that into account, they do not even have a sommelier at dinnertime to answer any questions or talk to you about the wine. I found that odd especially being in Italian wine country. Special shoutout to the bartender though who was great! Overall, the setting and food are great but there are so many beautiful places in Tuscany to stay (that would actually appreciate your business) that I would look elsewhere than Castello di Vicarello.
