The food here is simply exquisite, and I loved how the rooms here blended traditional 'western' hotels with the Japanese ryokan tradition.

Nice resort in Kumano that I would recommend if you are walking the Kumano Kodo (trail): Pro: - beautiful hotel ground - some staff speaks English very well, actually saw non-Japanese staff there, for staff who couldn't speak English they were very friendly - if you don't want to walk the Kumano Kodo by yourself they have tour with shuttle bus that takes you between sections - good price - we stayed at the inidividual chalet decorated in traditional Japanese element that is quite beautiful and relaxing - hotspring available Cons: - hotspring was way too crowded as you can also do for day hotspring - lack of amenities in hotpspring change room - food was mediocre, but given the price, the food is not bad

Enjoyed a stay in one of the standard rooms but had opportunity to see o e of the smaller Villa types. Rooms were well appointed and beds comfortable. The standard room has a balcony looking over mountains opposite. Aside from the two twin beds, the room had an ample tatami seating area, making it feel more like a suite. Warm wood tones made for a relaxing environment. Bathtub was a large and deep step in type in the local style. Toilet and sink areas in the room cluster around the bath area in separate spaces. The food was delicious, drawing on local ingredients and specialities and the staff very attentive and kind. The onsen was spacious and clean with indoor and outdoor baths - most outdoor. Only slightly awkward aspect of the property is its overall layout with separate buildings for check in and check out which don't clearly indicate what should be done where. This is somewhat mitigated by a bus system around the resort. While we had specific reasons for staying at the resort, holiday makers without a car may find the location a bit awkward. The property does offer shuttle service to the local town/ station at set times so do enquire about this if it will facilitate your stay. If you have a rental car, parking is ample and free. Overall though I enjoyed my stay there and would happily stay there again.

We booked a room from Dec 19 for 3 nights. We contacted the owner of the property in Nov. to ask for a vegetarian breakfast. This was the response from the property below. ********* Your message: “We would like a vegetarian breakfast please.” “Dear ******* Thank you very much for reservation at Resort Kumano Club, I am very sorry for delayed reply. How many people need vegetarian food? Which food would you like to remove from the meal? Every animal food? Meat? Fish? Milk? Egg? Right now, because it is a peak season, I am very sorry but we are not able to Arrange the menu except for food allergy. The breakfast is Japanese food, so it contains grilled fish and omelet. Is it impossible to accept the menu? Sincerely, ************ We have stayed a lot of different properties. This was the only one to refuse to offer us vegetarian breakfast. It was shocked to say that they were too busy to make vegetarian breakfast. They did ask us to tell them what food we did not eat, but then they said they can only deal with food allergies, not vegetarians. I guess the owner of the property did not understand different people have different diets. They had no clue what a vegetarian is. So we did not write to them because we thought, we could just tell them about the breakfast when we checked in. The date came. We requested the veg breakfast again at the reception. All they said we did not reply their email, so we could not have vegetarian breakfast. We said to them that not to give fish to my husband, just give him salad and Japanese beans. It would be fine. I could not believe that they refused our request. That was the first time we have experienced an owner of a property refusing a vegetarian. The world is changing. Hotels need to realise that international travelers have different dietary needs and customs. Hotels that want to succeed in this new environment will have to show more flexibility.
