The Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel is one of the very few places we have ever visited a second time, and that in itself speaks to how much we enjoyed our stay on our first visit back in 2019. While the excitement inherent in a first-time visit is hard to replicate, the resort certainly didn’t disappoint on this second trip, and we were happy to have an opportunity to spend more time enjoying the facilities and taking part in some things we didn’t fully explore our first time around. While there are certainly some areas that could be improved; the large amount of basic items that attract ancillary fees, a bit of an unnecessary focus on procedure at the expense of accommodating customer requests, and limited dining options among them, the overall quality of the facilities and large number of offerings at the resort, and its convenient access to gorgeous Yonaha Maehama Beach with its powdery sand and warm turqoiuse water is a unique proposition that is very hard to match. We had the apparent misfortune of mostly cloudy weather during this stay, but even this turned into a blessing in disguise as it shielded us from the otherwise strong tropical sun and allowed for some very very long and relaxing days at the beach. For us, the Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel has set the bar for tropical resorts and will likely always remain a unique gem among them.

I had an enjoyable stay and the Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel and Resorts. Most of the staff were very helpful and outgoing. If you don’t speak Japanese, you’ll mostly rely on google translate or similar: that said, there are a few English speaking staff. It’s really not a big deal, just something to know. My room was updated and quite pleasant with a large sea facing balcony in a quiet building. The water is just beautiful in color. Things to know: -July 1 seems to be official start of season (regardless of how nice the weather is)…. Don’t expect boat rides like the sunset sail, save the glass bottom boat, before then. - if you don’t speak Japanese, you are not allowed to participate in snorkel and scuba trips from the resort (one of the reasons you might choose to stay there are the activities offered). This is not mentioned anywhere on the website. You are informed of this when you go to sign up. - email the hotel a few days prior to your arrival with your arrival details (on the bus/shuttle request form on website) to have the complimentary hotel shuttle bus meet you at the airport. (You won’t get a confirmation - but someone should be there). Let the front desk know your departure details for a free shuttle back to the airport. -breakfast is fabulous with many choices. There is usually a short line at 6:30 opening. Many local dishes are served. - dinner buffet is worth going at least once. There are many local dishes served. There are other restaurants on property that I didn’t try. - local bus stops at properties “front door”! On request, staff will provide you with a schedule. It is easy enough to get around if you aren’t renting a car. There are just the expected time constraints with public transportation. (One of the staff positioned out in front speaks flawless English) -the swimming area at the beach is surrounded by netting (some in need of repair) So swimming for families is safer. - Beach hours 9-6 -the property has a small orchard/farm and there is a free shuttle there - ask staff for shuttle schedule. There is a tour available at the orchard for a fee or you can purchase fruit, drinks and/or desserts - there is construction going on for an expansion project. My wing was not really affected at all by this. - pool was nice. It was open 9-6/6:30 - laundry room was so nice and convenient to have. Open 24 hrs. Detergent is included in the wash. No need to bring. In Summary, I enjoyed my stay at this property with the obvious frustrations of not being able to participate in the water activities, as previously mentioned. Food was delicious with many local options. Room was updated and comfortable with outstanding views.

Coral wing room was large for Japanese standards and recently updated 5. Drink truck near the beach is great and reasonable. Cons. 5. Old hotel. The age shows especially in the outdoor areas. Recommend a fresh coat of paint on the outdoor areas including the signage and large flower emblem seen from the pool 6. No bar service at the pool 7. No jacuzzi

“Bad experience because of tattoos”

PROS: the ocean view is amazing and the rooms in the ocean wing are big and very nice. The beds are comfy and the entire building seems to be well cared for. PROS: the ocean view is amazing and the rooms in the ocean wing are big and very nice. The beds are comfy and the entire building seems to be well cared for. It was pretty easy and inexpensive to get here from the airport with a taxi. The hotel staff is polite and pleasant, very welcoming, especially the lady that helped us check in. CONS: the restaurant are more on the expensive side and the staff doesn’t speak English or doesn’t seem to understand even basic sentences. The worst part for us was an incident our very first day: we were stopped while trying to get into the pool because my husband and I both have tattoos and we were told we needed to either cover them or stay out of public spaces (the resort’s beach, the pool and the restaurants). We found a workaround by going to the public beach nearby, but that means we don’t have access to the resort’s utilities like a bed or an umbrella on the beach. To use the pool we had to cover most of our legs and arms. This stay was booked for us by a travel agency, so we didn’t know about this rule and while I get that there is stigma in Japan around tattoos, I also know that during our three-week trip to Japan this was the only instance where they have caused an issue for us. We didn’t have issues even at a traditional onsen. Overall, it’s 2024 and foreigners have tattoos, so I find this rule outdated. At the very least, it should be communicated more clearly when booking the room from foreigners. I’m afraid I cannot recommend the stay to people outside of Japan and I would not book again.
